A couple of months ago I picked up a Westcut K5 in an antique mall. I brought it home and put it in my felt-lined display drawer. I'm always careful to lay my knves where they don't touch each other. So this morning I happened to pull out the drawer and the K5 had turned itself and the blade was laying against a Case 365-5. Strange. So I went to move it back into place and it pulled the Case right along with it. Turns out the K5 is weakly magnetic - not real strong but enough to "click" against other blades. Strange.

I have this with several knives - especially knives that are stropped. Something about stropping in particular seems to magnetize blades. Heating during grinding could also contribute to this.

Blade is made with iron material mainly, so weak magnetic is not strange, I think.
But none of my other knives display any magnetic tendancies. There's 5 other knives in that drawer and the culprit is the Westcut K5 for sure.

Steel is mostly iron which can and will become magnetic when its machined. Demagnetizing equipment is a must-have when you're machining lots of steel. It can also become magnetized by coming into contact with magnets. It's nothing out of the ordinary, many of my blades are slightly magnetic, you've probably noticed black dust sticking to the blade and standing up like "fuzz" while sharpening, this is the result of magnetism.

I think all of mine are magnetic after hanging from my magnetic strip in my kitchen (where I store my most of my folders in rotation) Also belt sander and strop probably does not help.
It does not bother me, if it did I would use cheap de magnetizer as mentioned earlier.

Actually, the magnetic aspect doesn't particularly bother me. I was just a bit surprised when I saw the knife had moved itself! My initial thought was kind of like Papa Bear. . . "Who has been messing with my knives?" All this makes sense - I just had not thought about it.

it happens. I have a few blades that are magnetic after I finish them, others aren't. You can demagnetize it with a cheapo demagnetizer from Lowes/Home Depot/Harbor freight etc.
hey i wanted to contact you about something for knives i just dont know how to. if you have instagram or something where i can contact you that would help!

I do have an IG, mazerjs...feel free to reach out.

Throwing knives get magnetized if they hit the same way every time. Dropping it on a cement floor demagnetizes it. It’s just about aligning enough particles.
