Magnum Camp edge thickness?

I'm thinking about buying a Magnum Camp and would like to know how thick the edge is where it meets the bevel. I have a Companion and thought the edge was a little thick, so I reprofiled it. Because the Magnum Camp is advertised as a "moderate duty chopper" I suspect (and hope) the edge is thinner than that of my ass-kicking, almost-a-hammer, wickedly-sharp prybar Companion. Can anyone fill me in on the edge characteristics, or maybe post a pic comparing the edge cross sections of the Camp and Companion?

Thanks for the help.

hd2k_va,
First the measurements, then the pics.....

These knives are my personal BK&T's. I saw your post this afternoon, and decided to measure mine, and post some pics.....

CAMPANION...edge behind the factory bevel, .0450". This is a TALL bevel...that measurement is .0925" up from the edge. Yup, its fairly thick, but with the bevel that tall, it cuts well.

MAGNUM CAMP.....edge behind the factory bevel, .0295"[!]. This is only .050" back from the edge. THIN.

C/U-7....edge behind the factory bevel, .0340". The bevel is.0650" tall. Good compromise....cuts well.

Keep in mind the these knives are all sharpened by hand. There will be variation in the angle of the bevel[and of course the lenght] due to this. The folks in the sharpening room work towards the knife being SHARP, not a specific angle. I believe these blades to be representative of our normal production[they were taken from regular stock].

Here is the first pic......

I included the C/U-7 because it was laying around when I started taking the pics...The edge comparison shots were more difficult to take...so I will only show the CAMPANION and the MCK. Let's see if these pics help at all. Don't laugh, I'm new at this:rolleyes:

Nice pics, Will. Any chance of a top-side view of the Magnum Camp's tip, maybe alongside the other two (particularly the BK7)?
Curious about the tip strength on the MC...

Owen,
I don't know how this will turn out.....

Top,
CAMPANION....stock thickness .225", tip thickness .5"back from tip- approx. .190"

Middle,
MCK.....stock thickness .188", tip .5"back from tip-.10"

Bottom,
C/U-7....stock thickness .188", tip .5" back from tip-.120"

The measurements are "quick and dirty" but close.

Thanks for the pics, Will, and for taking the time to measure them. Because of the BK7's grind, the measurements actually meant more to me than the pic did. They really put it in perspective.
Dang, I think I want a Magnum Camp, too.

OwenM,
Tough choice between the C/U-7 and the MCK. Either way, you are a winner, but unless OAL is a major concern, or you have specific military duties in mind, I think the MCK is the one to get.

Jerry Fisk knows more about how/why a knife cuts than ANYONE I have every worked with. Theoretical and field knowledge. It is no secret the the Arkansas Camp Knife is Jerry's baby...his favorite. There is something MAGIC about this design. It cuts like nothing I've ever worked with in its size. It MAY not chop like some of the .250" thick monster knives on the market[because of weight mainly] but how often do you NEED to chop down a tree bigger around than your wrist while you are in the field?

Your call, let us know what you get:D

Yeah, I really like the C/U7, as does my buddy who I bought one for as a Christmas present. Great knife.
I hear Jerry Fisk is hell on Coke cans with a Patrol Machete:D
I'm in the process of thinning mine out, since it's getting more use as a "weed whacker" and brush clearer, than as a chopper.

How would you compare the chopping ability of these three knives Will? I have the MCK and love it, I agree with everything you have to say about it and more. I most especially love the sheath for the MCK. I love that it can be mounted upside down on the side of my pack where it is easy to get to but I never fear losing it. But I'm looking for something shorter with similar chopping abilities for day hikes. When I compare the MCK to the CS 9" TM in thier shieth, they are the same length, a bit long for a walk in the park. Any plans to offer a Kydex sheath on the CU7 for us civilians? Thanks for making great knives!!!!!!:p
