I got the following for my birthday.
http://www.boker.de/us/pocket-knife/magnum/hunting-outdoor-knife/01MB789DAM.html

I am kind of new to knives. Don't get me wrong, I've played enough with knives in cub/boy scouts, and learned about them. But I never really learned much beyond safety, and so my college friend told me about different types of steel. I still don't really know much about it, is this knife a good knife? How would I go about sharpening it, should I just use a whetstone?

Thanks for your input in advance.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Sharpening is a big and complex topic. We have an entire forum devoted to sharpening and modifying knives: Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment

I don't know how good that Magnum version is. It used to be a step-child, but Boker seems to have some decent knives under that label now. As for the particular model, it is something of a flagship for Boker. They do it with different blade steels and handle insert materials. I look at it as their "Buck 110", a nice choice for an all-purpose personal carry knife.
