I've known i'd need a decent FAK before heading out on my new chosen pasttime of bowhunting. so i sorted one out.

I was initially looking at FAKs off the shelf in various chemists when I was in Sydney, but they all struck me as either not being comprehensive enough for a bowhunting kit or just being flat-out ripoffs.

i did get myself an old SLR pouch for my web belt.

yesterday morning, i had to go and take some pictures of the flash new merc ambulance our local station just took delivery of.

while i was there, i asked one of my local paramedics, Mel, if the station could sort out first aid kits.

"Not a Problem!" she says.

so i took my SLR pouch around yesterday around lunchtime and left her with the following instructions:

"I would like the most comprehensive kit you can fit into that bag".

she called me up this morning to let me know it was ready, i am amazed at what she managed to squeeze into it:

this includes the following gear:
1 x Triangular Bandage
3 x 30ml tubes Antiseptic (not for eyes, ears or brain tissue)
3 x 30ml tubes Saline
1 x Ventolin inhaler
1 x Micropore tape
1 x Leukoplast tape
2 x 20cmx9cm Propax combine dressing
2 x Propax Sterile wound dressings
10 x Alcohol swabs
2 x Eye Pad
10 x Splinter Probes
2 x SteriStrip
2 x Primapore pads
4 x 7.5cm x 10cm double sided dressing pads
2 x Cutifilm (big arse bandaid)
2 x 15cm x 2.3m heavy crepe bandages (snakebit bandages)
4 x 5cm x 1.8m regular bandages
1 x space blanket
1 x 15ml bottle Betadine antiseptic
Scissors.
Queensland Ambulance Service basic first aid booklet.

total cost to moi: $65.

that's a damn good deal in my opinion.

so if anyone else is looking to put a FAK together or update/restock their current one, can i suggest a little trip to your local Ambulance Station.

anyways, can anyone think of anything that's NOT on that list that really should be in the kit? please bear in mind that this is a field-kit, not a SHTF kit.

cheers
sambo.

a cat tourniquet, if you have training in proper use of a tourniquet, or atleast know a professional(paramedic, doctor ie.) who can go over there use with you. maybe a israeli battle dressing? lots of people on here (bf) have varied levels of training, i am sure you will receive lots of info for you to decide what, or if you wish to add anything

i have a current first aid ticket from my involvement with the State Emergency Services in Australia.

i don't know if i can actually get a torniquet legally in Oz these days (everythings a criminal offence over here). in any case, a Belt or decent loop of paracord can function as a torniquet.

the current reccomended method of treating snakebites they teach us in Oz is to use a big, heavy, long crepe bandage and firmly bind up the whole limb.

i've already been advised to stick a sheet of panadeine (or it's equivalent) tablets in there and a container of prickly heat powder.

Wow! That's some kit. If I every need my appendix taken out, I'm coming to see you first! :D

An israeli trauma bandage would be a nice addition, it is a very versatile bandage.

Overall it looks like a pretty decent kit, i would add more tape you can never have enough. Also since your hunting and that usually involves some hiking i would add a sam splint in case you sprain an ankle or something.

Hey sambo

could you take a pic of the kit closed up and give the size dimensions of the bag please.
I have a level 2 responder's kit with all that stuff.

Funny how when a FAK is assembled by somebody who actually knows what he or she is doing it comes out small and efficient ;). Add some personal use pills (Tylenol, allergy pills, etc - whatever you usually take) and you have everything you need in there.

hehe, i'm actually heading back to the Ambo station later today to go through all that stuff with them and figure out exactly what it's all for (eg: which pads for burns etc). there are a couple of block-type pad things (bottom left of the pic, next to the Leukoplast/Micropore tape rolls) which i think are for gunshot wounds

please also note: this pouch is my FAK, my whole FAK and nowt but my FAK. survivally type gear (fishing line, firestarters and the like) go into another SLR pouch.

sure thing. i'll post a pic this afternoon.

yuh, i wouldn't have thought to bring some of this gear if I had been packing it.

hence why i asked a paramedic to pack it for me.:D

the Ambulance service in Oz can't actually prescribe medications, so Mel left the paracetamol and stuff out of the pack for me to fill in.

a sheet of Panadeine tablets, a marker pen and a film can full of prickly heat powder has since been added

sorry, i got waylaid last Friday, but here are some pics of the kit with a Leatherman Wave for scale. yes, it's a little bulkier than most people would take with them, but please understand that I enjoy a little pig hunting with my compound bow. sometimes (usually) i get the pig, sometimes the pig will get me (but not yet thankfully).

Sitting here, as I am, with a seriously fudup leg, one of the things you need in that kit is a SAM type splint.
I was out a week ago and had to cross a river by " boulder hopping".
I slipped and wedged my calf between two rocks.I thought I had broken my leg....it felt like it.
I immediately wrapped it tight, with an ace bandage, and put on the SAM splint and was able to hobble out.
Next day I could put zero weight on it. Doc came by with some good drugs and anti inflammatory injection and today, 6 days later, I still limp a bit.
Make sure your kit includes some things to get you out in case of a leg/knee/foot/ injury.

this is illegal?? why?

because Australia is a ph**ked up nanny state where seemingly everything is an "offence".

if i was a registered Nurse, Paramedic or Doctor, i could buy one.

as for the SAM splint thing, i'll look into it.

Wow.

In any case, get a SWAT-T, as good as a dedicated tq for that specific application, but doubles up as an elastic bandage for holding on splints or as a top wrap over bandages. It's probably lighter than a tq, too.

Speaking of which, what's the tonnage on that kit?
