My little swiss family.

I noticed that two blades had this designation, the sportsman and the cadet. The Farmer was unmarked on the side opposite the Vic engraving. Is it just a designation of the blade style?

It all goes back to the original Swiss milspec knife and the later Vic Officer's knife. The milspec knives (4 tools) had the year of issue stamped on the blade tang on the opposite side of the Victorinox Switzerland/Swiss Made Stainless Rostfrei and there descendants (Farmers, Pioneers, and other 93mm Alox) have that area blank. The Officer's Knife (6 tools) was not made to Swiss milspec and was not officially issued, but could be purchased by Officers and the general public, its descendants are the 91mm and 84mm Vic SAKs and the tang marking is a Trademark and heritage thing.

Is this a new thing- they finally deleted the crossbow on newer knives?

Good question. I am wondering the same thing because I have a Tinker and a Champ that I got years ago and have that marking. Recently I have bought two other SAKs that do not.

You can probably find what you're looking for on http://www.sakcollector.com/. I know Jamie's got some quite extensive experience putting dates to tang markings. Another change is that they've dropped the 'Rostfrei' on the front side of the tang recently, as well.
