Sorry I've searched including using google but I can't seem to find the mail order steak thread, or who's got the best steak available via mail order.

If you wouln't mind please post your sources here.

I know gollnick had some..

Thanks.

My last order from them sucked, badly. I won't be wasting money with them again.

In my experience, mail order steaks aren't that great.

My local grocery stoes have cheaper, higher quaility, and fresher meat.

omaha steaks are no better than dog food-my mom bought me some last xmas-cheese cake and bacon were good everything else sucked, and i was supposed to get some free stuf they stiffed on-

local meat market is way better, heck the ones from bj's wholesale were much better

> local market

Actually that's a good point I could go to whole foods and pick up something pretty nice.

If you aren't concerned about prices and want to impress the guests with your grilling abilities, go to your local Morton;s Steak House, ruth's chris, smith and wollenski, etc.... your major city has a local favorite. Order a couple of new york strips rare, to go. They have a grill that sears those babies at a hotter temperature than the old back yard grill will get to and the prime beef is going to be better than anything you can buy at the store or order in the mail. Also -- they usuallyhave great veggies so snag a few of those huge bakers. They know what you are up to so ask for advice on how long and temperature to grill them and bake them -- potatoes are likey to be an hour at 450 so time everything just right. I grilled the steaks basically enough to warm them up all the way through (which wound up getting to medium rare in the process) and they tasted like heaven. Of course the price is ridiculous so this is only intended for when obnoxious cousin louie comes over bragging about this and that.

Hmm , I just received my first ever order of Omaha steaks for my birthday yesterday , my best buddy Pat hooked me up.

I got quite a selection , pork chops , sirloin , stuffed sole , filet mignon , au gratin tater's and a very horribly dull Chi-com knife set :D

I just finished a pork chop , red hot iron skillet - olive oil , black pepper/salt/basil and it was excellent !!
Granted the only thing I've ate today was a PBJ over at mt Folks house lol.

But yea , it was good.

Sorry to hear you guys had bad experiences with them.

omaha steaks and burgers have this creepy red dye that stays red when you cook them on a grill-at least mine did-

Lol, that's when shit pie would be the main dish at my house! Some jerk shows up here, I sure aint buyin him a fancy steak! :D

Hmm , dunno about all the anti for Omaha , last night I had the pork chop which was excellent , then around 10pm I fired up the "Q" and put on two of the sirloins I had thawed , I didnt see anything odd , just nice pieces of meat, no red dye.. Added my special seasonings and grilled for about 20 minutes and they were awesome :)

Sorry to hear you folks have had bad experiences with them , my experience thus far has been excellent.

I'm not out to impress anybody, I just want good eatin. Price a little concerned about.

The last few steaks I had in restaurants where poor. I'm not opposed to paying $25 a pound for dry aged beef at whole foods and cooking it myself.

It's getting harder to find good steaks around here, many restaurants have shifted to skirt steaks, flat iron steaks, etc. My assumption is they are trying to keep prices down while still offering "steaks".

The last steak I had was around $30 and it was a boneless ribeye, tasted fine and was tender, but by the time I removed the large hunks of fat and gristle, I probably had 4 ounces of actual easting steak.

Anybody try the waygu (I probably spelled that wrong) beef?

Find an honest to goodness real deal butcher where you live!

Avoid the grocery store chain places ... :barf: Some of them have good medium grade steaks but, the good stuff never ever goes there.

I found one butcher shop in a city of ~3/4 million people that was a real honest to goodness butcher. I tell them what I want and they give it to me. It's also cheaper then the mail order places too. Kobe beef really isn't out of your price range if you are shopping at the expensive mail order places.

Call around and ask the local butcher shops if they carry rabbit, elk, kobe beef, etc. When you find the place that stocks fresh geese and ducks and wild game, they should be able to hook you up with the best possible steak. And best of all, you get to see it before you pay so if it doesn't look right to you, the only thing you are out is some gas money and time.

tailgated today for another syracuse loss-11 in a row-

had the best steak ive ever eaten-a local mom and pop store -"nichols" in liverpool had a special on ny strip 5.99$ a pound-they cut me 2- 24oz prime cuts and i slow cooked them on my little pos portable grill-

just perfectly cooked 2inch plus thick pieces of heaven-no pink inside yet still full of juice, melted in the mouth -

i might not be the rich guy at the game but no one eats better at my lot-thats a guarantee

Finding a local butcher is a good bet.

Here in the midwest we have the Fareway grocery chain. Groceries are very reasonably priced, and the meat counter cuts the steaks and roasts from from full sides and quarters. You can tell them thickness, and they'll cut it for you at no charge. Premium cuts are readily available, but it's hard to get the week old (aged) stuff. The butchers snap that up.

You want some serious steaks?

They do mail order, but I wouldn't put their prices in the "discount" category.
Right now I would kick a crippled nun down a flight of stairs for a Peter Luger Porterhouse. Add Creamed Spinach & a monster spud...:D
One reason I sometimes miss NYC.
Some things do not travel well. Meat being primary among them. Find a good local source & develop a good customer relationship.

I've never tried a mail order steak, but around here we have Safeway grocery stores that sell what they call "Rancher's Reserve", and they are excellent steaks...And not all that expensive...
