I have to mail a knife to England (USPS). Has anybody ever had a problem with customs. In the customs description, I will probably write "camp knife" or "camp cutlery" and "sheath". Thanks for your help.

Ray, I've sent a number of knives out of the country and usually just put "hand made art work" on the customs description. No way an untruth and avoids the "weapon" issue. Might post the question on BritishBlades for some home ground information.

Do not write knife or anything "cutlery oriented" - that bespeaks value, which equals added tarrif, and/or confiscation.
Label it as "Forging Sample".

i'm in the uk, knives are ok to import, if i were you i'd qwrite "cutlery" or "tool" handmade usually helps too.

The main problem comes from knives that can be opened with centrifugal force, or knives that are marketed as combat knives as we have lawas against those

I have shipped a number of folders over in the past and generally marked them 'hand tools' or 'garden tools' depending on size. Never had a problem yet.

I just mailed a blade to Spain this morning. I put custom knife on the slip. I do hope it gets there.

I have labeled them "camping tools" in the past at the request of my customers. I have sent 8 or 9 to the UK with no problem. I use USPS Priority Mail International. If you happen to run inot som DB postal empoyee that tells you that you can't ship knves, he is wrong, but don't argue. Just go to the next closest Post Office. The USPS has a rule that automatics can't be shipped except between FFL holders, but I have run into one dim bulb senior counter clerk who seems to think that applies to all knives.

I have shipped hawks all over the world including quiet a few to the U.K. I have always listed them as camp tools also. I also ship USPS priority International. Like Joe says if you have a problem go to the next closest PO. I have shipped so many Internationally my regular PO clerks do not even ask questions anymore. They just check to see if I filled all the customs papers out. They all know whats in the box.

I too have shipped many blades to the U.K.
Do all your packaging at home no matter what you put on the customs forms.
