Cold steel claims that they introduced the tanto blade design to the us market, and others say it was bob lum.,,, does anyone actually know who introduced this blade style to the US?

The traditional Japanese tanto poit, or the American "broken sword" tanto point? They are two drastically different designs, but I think it was Cold Steel who introduced the point, "broken sword" type of American tanto...

While the oppertunity is here, what does everyone think of cold steel tantos? I like the look of them, but have never seen one in the flesh (steel?). So, any opinions?

I like them a lot! I have held some of their nicer ones, and their Recon Tanto. They look good (to me anyways) ad they feel really comfortable. Put a Recon Tanto in your hands, and if you don't mind the Kraton you'll buy it. The feel of that blade is great.

James, I've had the opportunity to own the Master and the Magnum IX tantos of Cold Steel.

Fit and finish was superb. They sure look pretty cool. But I never tried slicing anything with them, only paper, so I don't know how long they will hold an edge.

I ended up selling both as well, since I can't bear to use them.

I have an old model of the CS Tanto, no master, no recon, just the original tanto.

It chops well, stabs well, and has enough heft that I don't think it would mind doing all the other things I have not the guts to abuse it with. I truly believe my car door would complain much more than it should the two encounter each other some day.

It is a large knife. I personally, care for smaller ones for most work. And this one is half and inch smaller (six inches hilt-to-tip, new ones are six inches of sharpend blade). I think much bigger would be unweildy for anything other than probing someones backbone...

I have always been under the impression that Bob was one of the makers to introduce the "American Tanto", and I recall one the "Big Three" knife magazines making that same remark in the last month or so. By the way I have both a Cold Steel Magnum Tanto, and A Bob Lum tanto, and there is no comparison, although the Cold Steel is a very good knife in its own right.
