Maintaining high carbon blades?

Hi, what do u guys use to wipe down your S30V/VG10/154CM/etc. blades?

Would it be enought with plain old WD40 as far as rust prevention is concerned?

I really don't do anything special for my S30V Native. If I get tape goo or chicken fat on the blade I wash it with a dab of soap and dry it off with a paper towel. I take care not to get water in the pivot or around the lockbar but it's pretty low maintenance. I'll spray my 1095 and 5160 blades down with some silicone spray and that's usually enough. But I'm in SoCal, inland enough to be pretty dry most of the year. YMMV

Those are stainless steel, you don't have to do anything except wash and dry.

I agree with Mete, wash and dry your stainless...less stain not rust proof so make sure you dry sooner or later. Lubricate the pivot as needed. Benchmade recommends miltec, some manufacturer recommends tough glide, slipjoint lovers recommend mineral oil.

Have to agree with Brownshoe. The steels you mention are VERY forgiving (if you keep acidic compounds away from them...or at least limit the exposure).

Like Brownshoe, I use mineral oil for more sensitive steels. And I've never had a problem (30+ year lab rat).

Same as Fink on stainless, with high carbon I don't do anything special either. Just rinse them off with water then dry them down in a timely manner. Never had any problems.

I was just a little concerned cos i live in a tropical n high humidity environment, pretty near the sea (salty air).

Stuff like ball bearings and battery contacts get oxidzed after bout 2 months. Not really rust, but more of greenish white stuff starts forming on them.

Any of u guys living near the coast had this kinda experience before?

Don't live on Padre Island or the Houston Ship Channel, !!!Everything corrodes there !
