What is the best way to clean/wipe down a mirror-polished blade without adding fine scratches? Cotton cloths vs. chamois? Also, is it advisable to use a microcrystalline wax like Renaissance Wax on a mirror-polished blade? Will the wax adhere to a finely polished surface, and if you apply it, do you run the risk of adding additional fine scratches from polishing? I have heard that using Ren. wax will place a protective coat that will help prevent those pesky fine scratches that mirror finishes seem to attract. Sorry for the newbie question. I appreciate any guidance you might care to provide. Thanks.

Hi,

I prefer to use a chamois cloth, and mineral oil. Various waxes tend to leave a build up, which can be annoying at time's. The general rule about cleaning,Etc..., is "when in doubt, don't". My expierence with morrior polished blade's is that they are bound to pick up a few scratches over time:( . Run a search in Bernard Levine's forum, as he has written numerous time's on the issue also.

Hope this help's:D !!!!!!!!

Deputy Tom,CH and Bob Bowie: Thanks for your tips and suggestions - I appreciate it very much. I will also check Bernard Levine's forum.

My oldest mirror polished blade is about 15 years old.
I use Ren. Wax and a soft clean cotton cloth. Never have seen build-up with Ren. Wax. The key is using a clean cloth or chamois to avoid mars and scratches.

Thanks for your tips and suggestions Bastid, much appreciated!
Are there any other Renaissance Wax fans out there?

Thanks

Not sure if you will get an answer, but it sure seems to be on a lot of maker tables at knife shows for a lot of years :).

While I haven't taken my knives and put them under a microscope to check for those microscopic before and after scratches I would have to offer my positive opinion towards Ren Wax. At least to the naked eye it does very good with mirror finished blades. No build-up either.:)
