Hey everyone, I just registered to this forum and I could not find a clear answer to my question after doing a search. The answer is probably buried somewhere in the archives but I am looking for a quick answer!

I have a small knife collection which is comprised of a couple of beauties. Of these are a microtech dragonfly butterfly knife, and a benchmade auto. Both knives have the typical black grime and buildup surrounding the components which allow the blades to move. I want to take better care of these knives and clean them ASAP. My father is involved in the medical community and has access to an alcohol bath sonic cleaner for surgical instruments, as well as unlimited compressed air. I was thinking of putting both knives in the sonic cleaner, and then coating the blades and bushings with oil.

Is this correct?! Would anyone recommend anything different? The handles of the microtech are aluminum, and the handles of the benchmade are a typical type of composite - would these handles be ok for the sonic cleaner? Thanks for any help, I will post pictures of the knives after they are cleaned.

It probably will work fine. You can just blow them out with WD 40, too.

Sonic alcohol cleaner  Me want one!

Sonic cleaners work very well to remove dirt etc. from the smallest spaces you can imagine. They are also great for cleaning jewelery. I have used a commercial one in the drug industry for 30 years for cleaning machine parts. This process also removes any lubricant from any area that requires it. Some also have heaters which aids in the cleaning process. I now use one purchased on the internet for about $25. a year ago. Use it to clean pocket knife that cannot be taken apart. I just use soapy warm water.
At work people use to come into the shop and ask to clean their wife's diamond rings or other jewelery. One placed a pearl ring in the cleaner and it came out destroyed. Ate the pearl up. He had to get his wife a new ring. Don't forget to lube after drying the knife. I would be very careful with most natural materials as it draws out the oils.
