Major pawnshop haul :)

This afternoon, i went down to the Gold and Pawn trading center in Portsmouth, NH (on the way to the Water Country waterslide park) to see if they were interested in my Tippmann paintball marker, they weren't, sadly, they already had 2 markers they couldn't sell...

as i was walking out, i spied their knife counter, boxes of knives grouped as to price, from $5 to $25, and me being a knife knut, i had to take a look.....

i think i got a pretty good haul, starting low price to high price, i picked up....

2 Victorinox Signature Lite keyring SAK's, one blue, one red, i gave Dad a choice of the blue or red, he chose the red, so i kept the blue one
(i only have pics of my blue one, as Dad loved his red one and put it right on his keyring)
price? $5 each

in the next bin, i found a SOG Crossgrip multitool, and a Radio Shack Leatherman wire stripper/plier combo, the SOG has a *tiny* amount of surface rust, but some 000 steel wool and some Flitz polish will fix that problem
price? $10 each

and finally the *big* haul....

in the next bin, i found a Victorinox CyberTool, the scales were a little scraped up, it had obviously done pocket-duty, but all tools opened and closed crisply, and the blades were sharp, all the bits were in the bitholder
Price? $20

and in that same bin, i found my *biggest* bargain yet, a Victorinox SwissChamp, very minor wear on the scales, the main blade had a "Migrosbank" logo in English, French, and Spanish, this was *clearly* a European SwissChamp, originally owned by an executive, it looked almost brand new, heck, it still even had the *pin* in the corkscrew slot, it was near-mint
Price? $20......yes, TWENTY bucks for the *biggest* normal "toolbox" SAK....

not a bad haul if i do say so myself....

so, any New Hampshire/Southern Maine Knuts looking for a good cheap SAK, go to Gold&Pawn, they have *boxes* of SAK's and multitools, as well as a bunch of those silly looking Pakistani "Fantasy" knives as well, always good for a laugh....

Nice batch of loot! I just happened to stop by our two local pawn shops on the way home from work today, just to look. You did much better than I. :D All I saw was an fair-condition Al Mar Eagle Ultralite for $79 (!!! :jerkit: ) and a nice, but unidentified ATS-34 A.G Russell linerlock very much like the BM690. But, it was $149!

Have you frequently had good luck at pawnshops?

Anyone else have any good pawnshop finds?

this was my first actual knife-specific pawnshop trip, probably not the last, they did also have an original integral clip FRN SE Endura, but it was *badly* abused, the serrations were rounded off and it had *massive* bladeplay in all directions, i mean you could see the *washers* around the pivot pin move, i advised them that that Spydie was dangerous and should not be sold, as there was a very high probability of lock failure, and they took it out of the case

Local pawn shop has lots of Gerber multi-pliers for about 1/2 of new depending on the retailer's price.

I also picked up Gerber Mark I and II, EK Commando, CS Recon scout, and several other knives at an Army surplus store last year. Looked like some guy brought in his hardly used collection and the store was selling them way cheaper than their Made in China junk cause they were "used"

It's a gamble but such deals make for good trading material for the knives you really want. Traded off most of the daggers to collectors in return for their single edge knives. No one wants the EK Commando for some reason.

I'm more impressed that a guy in New Hampshire was on his way to a Waterslide Park in mid-April. Seems to me that would make for a "Weenie-Shrinker Day". :D

Tim, i wasn't about to go to a waterslide park this early (however i *WAS* walking around in just a t-shirt today, it was a wonderful, balmy 65F today....

the reason I gave those directions was for any of my fellow Southern NH/Southern Maine Knuts that wanted to check the place out

anyway, i just got done sharpening up my haul, and my impressions are the following;

the Radio Shack Leatherman blade sharpened up rather nicely for a chisel-ground blade, it's actually got a reasonably sharp edge for a mediocre blade

the SOG Crossgrip, OTOH i'm *extremely* dissapointed with it's blade, it took me the most time to sharpen, and it barely took a servicable edge, on a scale of 1-10, i'd rate the blade performance a 3, i'm not happy with this one, the compound leverage pliers are nice though, i can double over and flatten a bottlecap easily with them

i forsee a couple possibilites with this multitool....
1; throw it in the center console of the car, just in case
2; trade it for store credit at KTP, as long as i get $10 for it, i'll be happy
3; hold onto them and give them to my nephew, Logan, when he's old enough, the blade is not scary sharp, so it'd be relatively safe for him to use, and since it has pliers and other tools on it, he'll associate knives with tools

the Signature Lite is a great little keyring SAK, took a scary sharp edge with a few passes down the Sharpmaker rods, and i absolutely love the idea of the little retractable pen, i'm always searching for a pen, never have one on me when i need it, now i will...., the red LED, well, lets just say it's only designed for close-in work, it's not even useful for EDC walking around at night, far too dim, but that's not it's purpose, it's a short-range light, keyholes and low-light signing

the Cybertool (a SAK i've *ALWAYS* wanted) also took a great, scary sharp edge, and the minidrivers will be a big help in taking apart PowerBooks and iBooks, i'm not a fan of the mini LED flashlight Vic seems to be enamoured with lately, so i was glad to get a Cybertool without that superfluous light, one thing i noticed about the Cybertool bits is that the T-8 Torx tip is a little worn, any idea where i can purchase a replacement set of bits?

the Swisschamp, well, i still can't believe i got one for $20, this is a SAK i've lusted after for a long time, but was unwilling to spend the $50-60 it retailed for at local outlets, so finding one for $20 was a no-brainer, it also took a scary-sharp edge, this one will be added to my EDC arsenal, riding alongside my Leatherman Blast

the other day i got a panawar katne, kurkri knife, and a batman and robin throwers with pouch for $78. at another place i got two three piece samuri sword set for $75. i know the sam's are cheap but they do look nice, and they are not wobbly. i picked up a knife from apawn shop in wy about two years ago, don't know manufactorer but it's a pretty cool looking knife for $20. if i can figure it out i'll post pics of the entire crew.

I found an almost mint condition old pushbutton swingguard hunting knife in a st pete pawnshop. It was ten bucks IIRC. I lost a year or so later while moving. one sold on ebay for a hefty sum dozens of times what I paid for it:grumpy:

A few years ago I found an effingham blackjack skinner, stag handled, the blade was pretty scratched up, in my local pawn shop for $35. Talked them down to 25, took it home, broke out the sandpaper and mousepad, it is beautiful now, and as sharp as the day is long.

In 58 years of livin', I've never been in a pawnshop. I think I'll be breaking that "Fast" come Monday.

Do you "negotiate" the pricing at pawnshops? I have no idea how they operate.

Nice score, our pawn shops want more for their used knives than you can buy them new for. :)
Here too, much of the time. Perhaps bargaining is expected?

You just have to adjust their attitude.
They're brain damaged from all of the perfume and gold getting into their systems.
I used to steal from pawnpricks.. The internet made them wiser ( and greedier) :thumbdn:

I hear more an more about deals comin outa pawn shops, I will have to swing by one around here and see whats what. Maybe I'll get a deal. Great haul by the way.
