Are those still made? In Russia? If so, are new ones available in the US, and if so, where?

Thanks.

The IJ-70's were the last new-production Russian made Makarov's imported to the US. Then, the Clinton administration made the joint agreement regarding which Russian Firearms the US would let in, and Maks were not on the list. You can still get those for a couple hundred bucks used. There is also some East German Makarov's imported until a couple years ago, so those can still be found pretty easily as well. The East Germans are C&R eligible, and sell in the mid-300's IIRC. Same goes for the Bulgarians. If you like the caliber, but aren't heart set on the Makarov pistol itself, there is quite a few CZ-82s on the market right now.

SkinnyJoe, you'll get more knowledgeable answers at the Makarov discussion board:

I bought two Bulgarian Maks (unissued) back when they were $100 (plus shipping plus transfer fees). A couple of months ago, I looked to see if these were still available and found some used ones selling for around $300. To me, that said that the supply lines may have dried up, but I'm not positive.

Country of origin can make some difference in fit and finish (Russian, Chinese, East German, Bulgarian), but overall, these are some well made and extremely reliable semi-auto pistols. I often carry one in a Fobus paddle holster when hiking.

Ammo prices are crazy these days, but you can find good quality Barnaul 9x18 ammo at a decent price here: http://www.dansammo.com/ammo.asp
