Make a blade?

I'm getting the LE HEST Folder whenever they decide to ship it to me, and from the looks of it, it's going to be perfect for me, minus the blade. I'm a fan of stainless blades...don't lecture me on D2 being perfectly fine, I'm not dissing the steel or the knife.

Basically I'm asking who would I go to, to get a new blade made for the knife to the exact measurements presented in something like CPM154, S90v, or even something like S110v?? And what would I expect to pay?

Thanks!! :D

D2 IS PERFECTLY FINE!!! IT'S ALMOST STAINLESS!!! HOW DARE YOU INSULT D2!!!

;)

Kidding, of course. I'd recommend posting this in (or having a mod move it to) the knifemaker's forum. I'm sure some of the guys there would be willing to do it or, barring that, would be able to point you in the direction of someone who does such things.

And of course, if you get a new blade made for your HEST, be sure to take/post lots of pics of it! :)

Phil Wilson works with all of those steels. He will at least do modifications to his existing blade styles, but I'm not sure about complete custom work. It's definitely worth asking him, though. He's highly regarded. He's also a member of this forum if I remember correctly, so there might be other discussion by him of custom work.

Good point, and thanks :)

I'm going to report this post and whatever mod sees this if you could please move this thread it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

I talked to phil and it looks like it's just out of the cards for him. Anyone else out there capable of making something like this for me?

If you are near Des Moines, I could take a look at it. I'm in Altoona. I usually work with CPM S30V, but CPM 154 shouldn't be a problem. S90V or S110V are quite a bit more difficult to work with, or so I'm told.

Thanks for the reply! Yea S90v and S110v are pretty crazy to work with from what I've seen around here. I'm in Ames though, and I'll definitely be getting back to you and see if we can get something to work if nobody takes me up on the S110v.

I share your disdain for D2. It turns to red dust in my pocket in the summertime. Good luck on finding a custom maker who will build and retrofit a high end stainless blade.

S110V is supposed to be better than S90V for grinding. Buy enough S110V for three blades and send me a pattern and I'll see what I can do. I'd enjoy the chance to work with the stuff. I can't guarantee a mirror finish, though.

Charlie,
Before getting into something more than your abilities, stop and decide if you are up to making an exact replacement blade yet.

BTW,You would need the whole folder to fit the blade.

Seem like a harsh reply to some one offering to help. If it was me I would let
zaph 1 have a dig, steel isn’t that expensive and I dont think he would be offering if he thought he had no chance of doing it.

Making an exact replacement folder blade in a high alloy stainless steel is a task best left to those with more folder skills.

I am not being harsh on Charlie, and I know him and his abilities. He is a good chap, and learning all the time. Sometimes a newer maker will get excited and offer to do things beyond his equipment and experience. I don't think he will take my statement as being negative, but as being more like Dutch Uncle advise. Most won't understand this statement, unless they grew upon farms with horse drawn equipment, but " pulling back on the reins will save the horses.". (Translation - Slowing someone down can save them from wearing themselves out. or "Working slower can get more done". )

Again with those encouraging words, Stacy. I wouldn't have offered if I didn't think I could. The toughest part might be finding S110V. If you'd like, I could make one out of S30V first.

Well zaph thanks for the offer, but due to some recent events im going to be returning the folder anyways so I won't be needing a blade made for it.

No Problem. If you're ever in Altoona, feel free to stop by Repair.com and see some of my work. I might just go out and buy a cheap folder and make a new blade for it, just for practice.
