Here's a quick vid I made on the basic patern needed to make a gill net... While being an effective means of getting game, as well as having a bunch of other applications.. it requires allot of cordage, so remains more of a longterm wilderness living skill or more of a craft type activity, For the purposes of the time constraints incolved with posting on youtube I only did the first full row of netting as a demonstration, I also kept the loops fairly large.

Glad you're feeling better.

That looks easy enough for me to do it! Thanks

Good to see you posting Riley. Bloke here has a site with some stuff you might want to filter out. Could be up your street.

Knowledge is power, and as a general rule I would not discourage someone from learning something new, especially wilderness or survival related in this forum. However, please remember- if you are going to make and/or carry a gill net- that they are illegal in many areas and possession is prima facie evidence of intent. In otherwords, you don't have to be seen using one in order to be in violation.

Cool post Riley, netting is very handy. It can be used for a lot of stuff even bird traps. I did a thread on making it from para cord last year.

Like hlee said though it's best to be careful where you practice with them. Once in my commercial fishing days being between the wrong two damns on the Tom Bigby River cost us $500.00 per net...we had twelve nets with us and a mass of webbing we used for repairs so they charged us with possession of 13 nets. That was almost 20 years ago.

Baldtaco, That is a wicked cool site (Bookmarked) lots of stuff to play with there,,, THanks

as far as gill netting being illegal In most areas it is. The vid represent a netting pattern as a means to an end... one could just as easiy fashion a casting or seining net utilizing a similar pattern... also If made from para cord one could make a hammock, or a interwive the net with natural materials and fashion a ghillie or hunting blind, (just some examples of the top of my head)

Mistwalker, Nice job there..I've made a few out of paracord...it;s just plan fun....(have a paracord net decorating the wall in my outdoor corner of the house)

Thanks again for viewing guys..greatly appreciated.

He's right though. When we got charged we didn't have even one net in the water yet. We didn't realize we were above the dam we wanted to be below. We even pulled up right in front of the power house at the dam we were below with two boats loaded with gear and nets in plain sight and went in and got a schedule and went on to set up camp. The wild life officer...and in this case I use that term very loosely...actually stalked us from the woods for a few hours while we set up camp and got ready, we had about 7 or 8 hours to go before the water would shut off so we were in no hurry. We heard him squirming around in his "hide" now and then but just thought it was an animal of some sort. But it was cold, even colder after the sun went down, and his patience wore down and he came down to our camp and stood by our fire while he told us what we were being charged with.

great stuff RR... i haven't tried making a net in a long time, i need to give it a whirl again...:)
