Panels of ray skin vs a full wrap on the handle completely negate the purpose of the material in the first place, and are a dead giveaway of a second rate handle.

The full ray skin wrap is a crucial element that provides strength and support to the handle.

The Japanese highlighted this by showing the seam on the side of the handle worn closest to the hip.

When I have my sword handles wrapped, I don't like to see the seam, so I have it offset.
