make a slate sharpening stone?

Hi everyone

sharpening stones are expensive to buy. and i want a very special size

so im thinking about making one out of a thick slate tile or something like
that ?

shouldn`t that could work good ?

also, what color would be the best to use? the grey or the ones with light colors? someone know?

i would just love to have a ca. 24" x 3" inch sharpening stone

An easier way to achieve the same result is to cut a board 3" x 24" and glue down a piece of leather the same size, clamp or glue down sandpaper and you can change your grit as you please, another with just leather and some lapping compound and you have a strop. Mine are not 24" but I have 5 so I dont have to change paper.
