Here is a fun skill, that can be used to hold a blade for sharpening or other tasks.

Here is the idea:

I chose to try it with the BK14. Thus, I chose a necker-sized stump.

Step 1. Baton the knfe into the stump until the spine is even with the top of the stump.

Step 2. Remove the knife, and baton it in again, this time with the edge up. It should be about 1/2 to 2/3 into the stump. (Baton with a wood stick, otherwise you will damage you edge.)

Step 3. Wind cord or rope around the stump starting at the bottom of the split and working up to the spine of the knife. This will create tension holding the blade in place.

I hope this can be helpful to someone!

Throw a stick in there and twist it and it will lock for sure. Use another stick to keep it from unwinding.

Makes sense to me! It occurs to me that this idea would also be handy to hold your knife steady and allow both your hands free while splitting small materials to make cordage

Thanks! I acutally read about it a long time ago in "The Field and Forest Hand Book" by Daniel Beard. That book has a lot of other cool tips in it too.
