Ok now that my kydex is working out so good thanks to everyone, Im needing input on how to make blades black. Im using cpm3v and 440c. Can you black the 440? The cpm3v seem to take to cold bluing but isnt there a more uniform way without sending them out for hot bluing? Bruce Bump

Krylon satin black spray paint. Clean exceedingly well before painting; let dry several days in a warm dry place before handleing. renew as needed.

get ahold of a local gunsmith and ask them, every metal treatment in the book gets used on guns, and you should be able to get info locally from a knowledgeable source.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that stainless steels will not hot blue reliably. All of the hot blueing processes (there are several) rely on controlled oxidation of the steel.

There are "black oxide" processes that will work on some stainless steels, but at least one is a relatively high temperature process. I'd have to look into the specs to see how high.

The suggestion about talking to a gun smith and a local metal finisher is a good one. A lot of gun smiths are interested in custom knives, and a lot of small finishing houses are looking for "new markets".

Krylon or one of the epoxy based finishes would also work. I've seen some AR-15 rifles re-finished with the epoxy sprays that Brownells sells. One gun was a "truck gun" which didn't get a lot of careful handling, and it seemed to be holding up well.

Hope this helps,

Fox Creek, Thanks alot. That is very good advice but "been there done that" I think I will listen to TJ. Bruce

Here's the info on the "Black T" folks. They do guns and knives. Good to work with too.
