Make me buy a Sebenza...please.

O.K. It's like this. I have a birthday September 9th, the last day of the Chicago Blade Show. I sit here almost every day and read and re-read the stories and comments buy owners and prospective owners.
I have already spent a sum on a custom blade for my b-day,but my bride has socked away more greenbacks for the trip south to Chi-Town.
The Sebenza falls at the absolute max for my fundage. May end up walking part way home if the gas isn't full when we leave.
What can be said other than "You have to pick one up and hold it."
If I hear that line again I'll buy a knife off E-Bay.
You see I live at least 40 minuets at 70 m.p.h. from the nearest blade store and I well... don't get out much. This trip will be maybe the only one I make.

I need to justify spending what to me is about 3 weeks of groceries for my family to buy a Chris Reeve knife.I am nuts?

Input?
Peace.

I would go to the show, fondle a sebbie or two, if you think "I MUST OWN ONE"
pack moma up, drive home, and start camping on the for sale forums. there is nothing wrong with being frugal. I just wtached a nice Sebbie sell for $200 shipped, either here or on KF. I picked up one a while back with a custom sheath for $250 and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Bay if you use your common sense.

I say it depends on your financial situation. If you are paying the bills, funding a 401k or Roth, have your credit card debt more or less under control, and are funding a little college fund for Baby Peace, then buy yourself a dang nice $400 knife. If you can't say to yourself that your finances are where you want them to be, then hold off for a little while until you can.

Buying a pricey toy, which lets face it - a Sebenza is - can be a burden or a blessing. You'll enjoy it half way if you do it too soon, or all of the way if you don't.

Peace.

Well spoken powernoodle. The Sebenza is the one folding "life knife". If on a fixed income, you'll only ever need one.

Never purchase anything you need to be convinced to buy. If you really want something and can fit it into your budget you won't need anyone to talk you into it.

I agree with SOD. If you really like it at the show, wait and get one on the trade or sale forums. That's how I got mine! I always wanted a small classic and got one in a trade (a few of my duplicates for a perfect NIB Classic). Watch the forums, Sebbies show up occasionally. Also, every trade I made here was great...the knives were exactly as stated. That says a lot for the BF membership, good folks.

Sebenzas are addictively excellent knives. They may even replace your need to buy many other knives -- or they may not.

Wait till the money is there. That's a long way to walk home from the show, pushing the car in front of you. :)

I've got 2 large Sebenzas and one small, an Umfaan and a Mnandi, and two Sables. I bought the Umfaan from Chris Reeve himself at a New York show. I bought the others on our Exchange forums, for a lot less.

Check out the Pass-Around forum, by the way. You will get an inexpensive opportunity to try out a variety of great knives you might otherwise not even get to hold before buying.

Sage advise all.
I sure appreciate the input. Perhaps I embellished the pushing the car home bit.I have bought over 70 knives since April of this year. Just because I liked the way they looked. I find the Sebenza so boring looking it's almost attractive. I like the Mnandi alot, and it looks like a blade I'd buy. But the following that the Sebbies have is so intriguing, almost fanatical in its praise by owners it makes me want one too!
I fell into the same feeling mode over the Howling Rat. Talk, talk, talk!
Everybody and their Aunt and Uncle raved about how great they were.
I bought one. Eh. No big deal. Nice thick stout blade. Sure bet I'll never break it. Cuts rather poorly. Hard ..no IMPOSSIBLE to sharpen to hair popping. Great at chopping but for any fine cutting at all the blade seems unsuited. It sits on the shelf, number 68. :-|

The look I get from the Sebenza is that it's very well balanced and the proportions on the blade itself are good too. It has a great surface to blade coverage almost as much as a Warncliffe blade. Homely it may be,much like Charlie Brown, but there is just something about it that I can't get out of my mind. I guess I just needed more input to push me over the edge. As I have amassed over 70 blades from handmade customs to factory superstars I still haven't found the one I want to collect.
You you what I mean, the one that says buy me and my family ONLY and we will build your heirloom collection to pass down for generations.
I am down to three manufacturers that I haven't tried.
Busse Combat,Chris Reeve and William Henry.
As of September 9th I am going to buy one of these manufacturers blades.
I am leaning to the plain LARGE Sebenza. Big hands. Need big handle. Or the Busse line. If none of them are at the Chicago Blade Show I'll probably just buy some knife that looks nice and wait till Christmas to order direct from someone. Who? That's why I started this thread.I was kind of hoping for that Sebbie I guess. Thanks all.
Peace.

Pretty much sounds like you have your mind made up. Get the Sebenza, it will grow on you looks wise; and the more emblishments to them the better. I personally love the style(tactical ruggedness). There is a lot more to the Sebenza than first meets the eye. WH's are nice collectable pieces, but don't plan on hard use for them. All CR's will out perform where other's stop, including the Mnandi's. Start your collection now, it's only going to become an addiction. Here's a cool site...

anybody know if that top right blade in the bottom pic has a polished blade from CRK?
Not entirely sure what you are asking? The top right Seb in the bottom picture is my wifes small regular with unique lighthouse graphic. Blades on the unique grapihic's come with a high satin finished. Almost polished if you will. Angle of my camera and lighting may be causing the blade to look high polished.
;)

Blackend you sure have some beautiful CR knives! I am drawn to the top picture. That raindrop Damascus and those groovy inlays make me have that roller coaster feeling in my belly.
I need them all. I must feed the addiction.
These CR blades really perform too right? Not just another pretty face and body. But count your life on it kind of cutting dependability?
Peace.

that's why you have to hold it

it feels more solid than anything i've held, it's not even close, it's also smooth as glass

Thanks for the nice comments Prince. Options on CR's Sebenza's are unlimited really, just depends on how long you want to wait. The top picture knives have Ladder(ivory),Ladder(Spalted maple), and Raindrop(micarta). All are stainless Damascus. The new cool thing that Chris is doing is coating the Damascus blades with a clearcoat finish for extra protection. The top two blades in the picture have it, the bottom(raindrop) doesn't. You can tell the difference in color. The factory normally doesn't coat the stainless Damascus, it doesn't really need it, I just requested it because I do indeed USE mine.
Yes, use these things. First I couldn't imagine spending this kind of money NOT to put them to work....oh, I meant Sebenza! :D
In my experiance Damascus cuts better than the S30v, sharpens easier too. I actually have two blades for each of the Damascus Sebs. The orginal blades were S30v; I had the factory fit the Damascus ones to the knife later. Gives the option of switching them out depending on what your chore may be.

Let me suggest that the advice to hold one is wise. I couldn't, living here in South Australia, and bought a small one anyway. I was disappointed in the way it felt in my hands until in desparation I added scales to each side--similar to a CR 'woodie'.
This changed the feel completely for me and it is now one of my favourite EDC's.
