Make traditional models with high-end materials

From the "annual culling" thread, I get the impression that Spyderco makes most of its sales from its traditional in-house models like the delica/endura, rescue etc.

It would seem that the people buying these models like not only the pricing/quality but also the DESIGN

The OBVIOUS idea would be to introduce these traditional models in high-end semi-precious materials as another angle.

Then you'd have 3 classes of products, the functional economy stuff, the collaborations and the high end stuff.

I'm sure that spyderco has thought of this before, so there must be some reasons as to why this has not been tried.

Best wishes from SYK

I'm 100% convinced that price is the primary factor with the sucess of the Endura/Delicas. You see, when I first saw Spyderco knives, they were of the all-stainless variety, and at the time I was a non-knife nut. The prices seemed astronomical--definitely above what I could afford for a knife back then, but the knives were very nice. The introduction of the Zytel handled models at least allowed me to get the desirable Spyderco features at a reasonable price. There are already comparable models to the Endura/Delica that do come in upgraded steels and handle materials.

It's the same way with Cold Steel: I've always loved their blades, buy I wouldn't pay what they ask for a Master Tanto. I recently got me an Oyabun that makes me just as happy at the moment for much less. Similar blade, just a less nice (but functional) handle to keep the costs down.

SYK - Price is the major issue. When a production knife approaches "custom" prices, sales drop off drastically.

Thanks for your replies.

I will continue buying and using the knives, but it would have been nice to have one or two of the traditional models in expensive semi-precious materials. Then I don't have to look elsewhere if the collecting mood strikes me.

Try Frank Recupero or the Santa Fe stoneworks -- sorry, I don't have the URLs handy, but they're easy enough to find with a search engine.
Maybe there is a jeweller in Golden (or somewhere) who would be willing to do some standard etchings or stone settings in stainless versions, sort of like the decorated Sebenzas?
All I personally want is a Calypso Jr. in simple, already-been-done-at-Spyderco carbon fiber.
