Make your motor variable speed

Funny you should ask this ..... especially today. Just now returned from the big city and a day of shopping. I bought exactly the same controller from woodcrafters. It says for routers and not for slow start motors. The guy at woodcrafters said it should work up to 15 amps. I wanted it for my 3/4 hp disk sander motor.

WELL ............. he was wrong. Worked in the full side ok. But on the variable side .... the motor hummed, twiched, and blew the fuse. So my answer for use with a grinder is NO!!! :D

At least I get to take it back. The guy promised. All I got to do is buy a fuse. It had a 25Amp one in it.

Regards

hi..I: think there controller is for a.c.motors equipped with brushes Eg. router ..I have a 1 1/2 H.P. motor brush type that i use a large reostat to control,it seems to work very well..

That type of control works well with fractional HP ac motors, but like was pointed out,not with anything larger.Unfortunately there is not really a cheap way to get good variable speed on a belt grinder. However a few knifemakers have made XLNT buys of the proper DC variable speed motors and controls off of e bay, guess you have to really keep a look out.BTW,step pulleys are not variable speed, but adjustable speed,as I can see it coming.Good luck John.

I have been using one of there 40 dollar motor and controller sets that is for a tread mill for over a year now with great results,I figure at this rate I could consider it a disposable motor. They have a 1 1/4 hp dc motor for 125 dollars or in that neighborhood and then they have a controller for it in the same price range also. There catalog is free but they dont have a website.
