My roommate handed me his heavy bowie last night and asked me to sharpen it(witch it needed badly) and make him a kydex sheath. I convexed the edge on my homemade guided system. It is very sharp now, considering the condition it was in. I will be making a sheath for it tomorrow, and make sure to add pics as soon as its done.

I might even convince him to let me strip the black coating off :D

Like I mentioned, I want a short HB. Will be watching this thread with great interest.

I should just strip it, and blame it on the fact that I'm a beckerhead. He won't understand but everyone else will :D

If you strip it, let me know what you used. I tried Klean-Strip on mine and it just laughed at me.

I've been saying it for a while now, but the coating on the Taiwanese blades is ridiculously tough.

I just finished stripping my War Sword and it took quite a while (had to do it with elbow grease because I have no chemicals to speak of). I'll try to post photos of it sometime tonight or tomorrow.

Can you post pics of your home made convex sharpening jig?

Here ya go :)

I epoxied a piece of leather to one side to convex. I clamp sand paper around the square tube.

The whole thing is a bit tedious at first, and I am going to tweek the clamp a bit. If you have any questions about materials and such just PM me and I can tell you whatever you need to know :)

So it looks like the Knife gets clamped to the 2x4 and the jig slides along the length of the 2x4? And the allthread(?) allows you to adjust the angle?
My brother and I are looking to build something similar for sharpening planer blades.

That's exactly whats going on. I used a smaller piece to clamp the knife to in order to accommodate shorter knives and such. The eyelet that the guide slides through is lose so that it can move side to side as you move the length of the blade. I plan on bolting it to my bench when I finish it, to eliminate flex.

I will get some more up tonight. And I'm sure it will be coming with us to CO in 2 weeks :)
