I am new to this forum and still trying to find my way around, so forgive me if I’m in the wrong place to do this.

MY QUESTIONS ARE:
Where can I get a Makers Mark template made?
Where can I get the material that the templates are made of?

Thank you guys,
Mike

Are you looking for a stamp or a stencil to etch with?

I had my son come up with logo I liked, and sent it to IMG. They tweaked it a little and printed several stencils and recommended several etchants based on the steels I would be using.

Looks like you are one of the few folks around here older than me. Fill out your profile with your location and some info about yourself. It helps with getting better answers.

Stamps can be purchased from companies like Evers. They are less commonly used today because etching has several advantages.
Stencils for etching can be made to order by several companies. Patricia at IMG electromark is a good one. Ernie at Blue Lightning Stencil Etch is another.

The machine to make stencils is called an etcher. You can build one or purchase one. The Personalizer and Personalizer Plus are the two most common ones used. Stencil making supplies can be purchased from etching machine suppliers. It is usually far better to get Particia or Ernie to make them for you.

A quick note.....Ernie Grospitch has handed over the Blue Lightning Stencil operation to his son Bo. Good guy to work with.

As a side note, check out the Personalizer Plus etching machine. I have one and am very happy with the results. These + electrolyte go with the stencils mentioned earlier to create the etched mark. Good luck!

First, I want to thank those of you who responded. Stacy, can you tell me how to get to my profile? It should be easy I’d think, but I can’t seem to find it.

Thanks,
Mike

More and more folks are switching to using a laser to mark n=knives ... and all sorts of other things. There is a laser thread currently running.

I am aware of the Maker’s Mark whiskey and the red wax. I just didn’t connect it. You’re right, a very good marketing idea. Amazing how marketing affects what we buy and how much we pay for it.

I suppose I am looking for a stencil, I’m not aware of etching with a stamp. Can you explain the stamp etching process?

I made an etcher with a flat head brass bolt with nylon washers and heat shrink tubing around it to insulate it. I hooked it to a battery charger. I used salt water and vinegar solution. It works, but where I etched it was a reddish color, I suppose from the brass bolt. I actually liked the reddish color.

I’d been trying to do that on my phone and couldn’t. I was able to do it on my laptop. I was going to load the app on my phone, but after looking at the video I still can’t figure it out. I guess I’m a little slow on that. Lol

A stamp is used to physically stamp an impression(your makers mark) into your blade. It’s more often done when forging a blade and becoming less and less popular.

Electro etch is much more common and easier to show finer details. Most commercial, and many homemade, etchers will switch between AC & DC to etch for depth and darkening. I also use a piece of brass as my contact to etch and haven’t seen any reddish color. The reddish color is likely only active rust.

I went the other way from etching to stamping. But I work in larger numbers than most. Cold stamped 102 blades yesterday, last step on blade prep prior to heat treating. For me far fewer problems stamping then etching and MUCH less time.
