Hey guys, I recently purchased a GIB and will be hopefully up and running by the middle of next week with it, of which I can't even begin to describe how excited I am! Anyway, I've been using my little Delta 1x42 for my knives which only allows for flat grinds. I ordered both platens offered for the GIB and will be able to do flat and hollow grinding but I've never done hollow grinding before. I know it takes a lot of practice but I was hoping maybe there is a maker around Portland, OR that might be willing to let me come out for a day or so (I wish it could be a lot more than that but school and time with the kiddos come first...) to your shop where I could get some help with hollow grinding. I've wanted to check out local makers for a while but with only having the Delta to work on I didn't know how much good it would do me besides making me lust after having a shop with a 2x72 in it. Now that I'll be running a 2x72 with multiple grinding options I could really use some guidance, especially since this will primarily be to help me start making my own straight razors; so any makers experienced with straights would be fantastic!

Anyway, if there's somebody who can give a brother a hand with this I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Aaron

I'm in Salem. You are welcome to drop by sometime though I have not done any hollow grinding in close to 20 years. I did get a large radiused platen from Nathan though. That would be perfect for a straight razor. Also I am pretty new to the 2x72 myself. I used a 9" disc up until about 6 months ago. Anyhow if you would like to come down drop me a PM. email or look on my website and call me.

Take Care

I'm in Gresham. Haven't done any hollow grinding in years. I'd taught myself how to hollow grind using a stone wheel. Now that was tough but with a 2X72 it was 100% easier. I would suggest by starting with the scrape steel. The thing I remember mostly about hollow grinding is once you got a feel for it staying on track was pretty simple. Knowing when to stop before you went to far was my main problem.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen! You 3 are all on my list of "hopeful responses" but I can't believe not a one of you hollow grinds! Maybe that's a sign for me... ;) (maybe it's also a sign that this is post #666 for me)

Chuck - what size is the radius on that platen?

Motor came in today so now all I'm waiting on is the wheels/belts that will be here monday! Tomorrow will be spent with my son (he's 4) drilling, tapping, and getting the frame ready to go, he's almost as excited as I am! I feel bad that I can't have him out with me when I'm grinding, I'm too paranoid about his lungs/personal safety. Oh well, I'm sure he'll be showing me up in no time!

I guess you have not looked at my sales Aaron , 50-60% of my knives are hollow ground . I was just being an ass I guess , but I can show you how to make the mistakes but then how to fix them .

I got the 48" radiused platen. I have not installed it yet but will in the next couple of weeks. Need to get one project done that is WAAAY behind schedule.
