Hi everyone i found a vintage double bit felling axe while metal detecting a 1800's mill site. it was badly rusted and pitted but I managed to find some sort of makers stamp. its is circular with what I believe is writing inside the circle. If anyone could tell me any information about this axe I would greatly appreciate it. I have spend 3+ hours on yesteryeartools website with nothing to show for it.[/IMG]

This one has been 'left out in the cold' for quite a long time! Will never be 'Miss Axe World pretty' but when you're done cleaning it up it'll cut wood with the best of them. Your file is gonna 'skate' initially due to rust hardening of the surface of the blade but once you get through all that it's back to normal. In poking through the Net does Belknap-Bluegrass come to mind with regard to the stamp?
Others (and more knowledgeable) on here will chime in with regard to ID and advice on going forward.
But as an aside I'm also gonna guess that you more want to know what it's worth (at flea bay auction) than what it might do for you. Can't help you there!

The only Belknap I have is a single bit. The mark is kind of "clover" shaped. I guess they also had a larger stamp.

Darthtaco- you thinking something like this?

I can't tell for sure from the OP's pictures and the pitting but does it look pretty circular and placed in a different place- closer to the edge maybe?

Don't know much about Belknap markings other than the two sizes.

thanks for the information. the circle does seem to be centered on the axe, but only the top right is still visible; That's why it may look closer to the edge, but it is in the middle. can't wait to see what else I find out.

Looking at it twice, it does look rather circular. We need the almighty Steve Tall.

Hahaha. Your guess is as good as mine. :)

Suggestion for rob: do a google image search for
embossed axe
and examine the round ones that could be a match.
Yours looks like it has double lines (curved) both above and below the perimeter words.

Was ALMOST thinking, and this is ALMOST, that it looked a bit like a Plumb Chapmion embossing. Might be the Members Mark speaking.

That very well could be it. There is a double ring on the inside and outside of the circle on mine, but the size and location and shape look exactly right. Maybe just a year or two different from that one if I took a shot in the dark. thanks for posting.
