I am getting ready to order some stencils from Ernie Gropitch, but I can't decide what design to go with:confused: I am figuring that I will need stencils at 1/4" high for smaller blades and 3/4" high for every thing else

Here are my designs

#1/ I like the name inside the maple leaf, but I don't think it will translate to well to the smaller size.

#2/ a variation of #1 but with the name on the out side, I have the same issues about the smaller size on this one

#3/ plain and simple just my name and Canada in the middle.I know it looks a little off center, but everyhing is centered and equally spaced. I think this one will work at both sizes, but #1 is my favorite

I would like to order by the end of the week, November 26th, so I can actually put my makers mark on my next batch of knives. Any advice is appreciated. I only want to use one makers mark, and if I start forging I will have a stamp made up the same to differentiate between forged and stock removal knives.

Especially if you want to stamp with the same logo, I would consider going to a simpler font with a thicker line.

Your last name is Mason, or Masan, Masauc
the second initial is..G, or a Y, or Z

and I think that etching will be smaller and less clear than the logo on the computer

Consider using some sort of outline
if you will ever etch damascus, you can keep the whole area bright

If you use the first one make the leaf an outline, it will etch better. Both are good.

Unky, I really like the oval with block lettering and the maple leaf. Gets your leaf in there, but still very simple and clean.

My first stencil was pretty "busy" I thought once it was on the steel. If you remember, it was the one with the Martini glass. It looked good on paper, but on the knife it seemed like it interrupted the flow of the blade.

I settled on a second design and tried to keep things much simpler and I am much more pleased with the new one.

I agree. Eliminating knives would give you more room...and it's obvious what they are ;).

Block lettering gets my vote over the first incarnations.

Love the design with the smaller leaf in the center.

Last couple of edits, I think it will be one of these two

with knives and leaf out line

no knives, bigger leaf

I like the bigger leaf on this version.
but then, i also liked the original #1 but agree the script would be difficult to read.

So I will be sending the last one off to Ernie Gropitch tomorrow then. thanks everyone for your input.

#2

How about a period after S and after the G still keeping the space before mason
(so we know they are initials and not something else )

What software are you using?
What file format does Ernie Grospich want it in?

I have talked to laser engravers, they are mostly using adobe illustrator.

I like it without the periods, its a personal thing. While I was in college the English teacher preferred that initials not be punctuated and it just stuck with me. Now when I see something like S.G. Mason it just looks wrong and sloppy to my eye.

Ernie requests that the files be sent to him in a 300 dpi, PDF file. JPEG file or Microsoft Office file, I am using Photoshop for this.

I'm a little late here Unk but I like what you came up with. I went through this with mine and instead of knives I was considering putting "custom knives" under my name. A number of people rightly pointed out that what I was making was pretty obvious to what the person was getting.

Ernie is fast, got this when I woke up this morning

I have to head out and get a double charge taken off my credit card and it looks like I am ready to order
