Makers Mark location

I ordered a Personalizer Plus this morning and just got off the phone with Ernie about some stencils for a makers mark. I decided that I didn't want to have the makers mark on the face of the blade but rather on the spine. Is this a mistake? If it is located on the spine is there a common location for it? Towards the center? Over the ricasso? Since the majority of people are right handed should the mark be applied to it's readable while held in the right hand with the blade tip facing away?

I also decided to not use my name, Michael Hill. I really felt that the name is very important for the true custom makers out there. Instead, I plan on building my line of knives and just making them available as they're finished. So with that in mind I decided to go with Core Knife Co. Being from Washington State, my wife and I thought it would be interesting to tie the "Core" in with Washington so we've come up with some different idea for logos. These all just some sketches but you can get an idea. For tee-shirts or something. What do you think? I haven't finished the bottom one yet.

Neat logo!

I mark most of my blades on the spine now, typically between the front and rear of the handle scales.

I started marking on the spine because I didn't want it to detract from the grinds.

I will occasionally mark on the side, but it's rare.

On my wrapped Japanese knives, I still mark on the spine but it's more above the ricasso.

There really isn't a wrong way, so long as your mark is legible and it identifies you.

I hope I'm not off topic here, but yesterday I was puzzled by the subject line. I thought, "Why in the world are they posting about bourbon whiskey on a knifemaker's thread?"

Red, there would be no need to ask that question. I know exactly where the Maker's Mark is at all times.

Johnathan, thank you for the reply. I guess it doesn't matter where it is on the spine as long as it's legible and identifiable. Dealing with Ernie was a pleasure. I can't wait for the etcher and stencils to show up.

I just got my stencils from Ernie yesterday. I am a total noob and my marks turned out great, you will enjoy Ernie's stencils, they are great.

Yep Ernie's stencils ARE tops...

Micheal forgive me if I totally missed something but are you planning on putting the logo on the spine or just the text?

If I were you I would start it where the handle meets the ricasso (when looking at the spine) and reading left to right (tip to pommel). That seems to me the way most people would pick up and look at the knife.

Let us know how the personalizer plus is... I have just the basic version and works fine for me I just wonder if the variable voltage would have been a better choice

I'm just putting plain text, New Century Schoolbook, to be exact. No logo at all. The size is .089" X 1.000" and reads "Core Knife Co." with the spacing expanded by 1.5 pt's. I like the "core" logo and I want to have a lot of different things made, stickers, tee-shirts, etc, but not on the knives. There is a lot to be said about gorilla marketing when you're broke. :D

Make sure that people find YOU when they search the net for "Core Knife Co"

Ernies Stencils are Killer!! As far as your mark, I think it looks fine on the spine if that feels right to you. Andy of Fiddleback marks his blades on the spine and it looks great!

Your logo? LOVE IT!!! I would buy a tshirt with that Core knives logo on it in a heartbeat! When will they be done???

Jonny, I appreciate the feedback.

Shirts are a long way off. I mostly just started the sketches to see my wife's "Core Knife Co." with the apple core idea looked cool.. Personally, I like the apple core a lot but "Core" sounded kind of lame to me in the very beginning, like it was trying to sound too tough. With the apple core mixed in and tying back to Washington apples I like it now. Good thing too, my wife would have been pissed if I had nixed the apple core. I'm kind of a clown and I like funny stuff, and that apple core makes me laugh. I've got all kinds of sketches done up now with that apple core.

I do want to get some stickers made up quickly though. I want to send them out with the knives.

You've got some great artistic skill! Your core sketches are very nicely done. I like the first one you posted the best. The ribbon around the second one detracts a bit from the actual core, it's a little busy. Might be better looking in color though. I think it's a very cool idea to tie in the apple core/washington theme. I managed produce departments for 16 years for Safeway so I am VERY familiar with the Washington apple connection! :)

Keep it up!

I like the 1st and 2nd drawing better than the one with the ribbon. Very cool. If you are set on core knife co., why not buy the domain name now so you have it when you are ready for the website?

Would you mind sending me an email? I have a question for you that is way off topic.
