Hey y'all I ordered a custom stamp and got it in today, but I can't seem to get enough of an impression in the steel to make the mark readable how much force can you put these things under without breaking them? I've got a 4lb hammer and alot of aggression but I don't want to get to carried away.as always any help is appreciated, thanks
Sterling

Don't have a maker's mark, but driving the "No copy" stamp into a hardened steel key takes a world-class beating. I go for the 6# maul and one HARD strike.

12 tons will work on annealed steel

2 lb. ballpeen does it for me. You are not trying to stamp hardened steel are you? I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, it is just that I had a guy come to me the other day wanting me to stamp a name in one of my hardened blades. There is no hammer big enough to stamp RC60:)

Stamping hardened steel is not a question of hammer size and force, it's a question of hardness. Your stamp will deform when the hardness differential between your stamp and the hardened steel is reduced.

No, Its annealed steel I can get the stamp totake it is just not defined also it seems my stamp is pressing more to one side than the other. The press is a good idea I've got a couple 20 ton jacks laying around I'll try to fashion a press this afternoon.

Do not stamp "hot" steel unless you want to lose the temper of your stamp.

Success of using a hammer and a punch is largely dependent on the surface that the stamped piece is laying on. Try to use a 2# hammer and a good punch on a wood work bench isn't going to get it down. A plate or a bar of steel helps, but if the workbench top is absorbing some of the impact, you will never get a good stamp.

Another point is that the more surface area your mark is, the harder it will be to mark it fully with a hammer. Will not say that it can't be done, but using a press of some type will ensure good results all of the time.

I'm not sure absorption is the problem, I was stamping on a 200lb anvil that even I can't get to flex but I did form a jack press today and it worked famously to bad the mark looked off from trying to go over it but the next attempt is gonna be a good one

My problem has always been double stamping from hammer rebound. I bought an arbour press and the problem went away. I do have another holder for the stamp, here is my set up.
