Hey guys,

I've been working away on knife making for a while now and feel that I am ready to sell soon. I am in the process of designing a makers mark to put on my work.

I'm curious to see what your guys thoughts are on makers marks, specifically the size, location on the blade. What have you heard from customers with regards to makers marks.
Thanks for any input.

My thoughts after thinking about what to do for mine.

I prefer something simple that will etch reliably every time.

Your mark doesn't need to be a fancy as your logo.

I like a maker's name as a mark... ie WHEELER, I'm leaning towards B.AYRES, my name, for mine. If your name is Williams, or Smith, maybe add initials, or something unique like an anvil, or Hanson's sunfish?

I don't like the mark to detract from the knife. I usually only think that if it's too busy. Also, in using my name, it's ME saying it's my work of art. Part of me went into the blade.

One of these days when I have time, I'm sending Spark the ten bucks and changing my username to my name as has been recommended by other makers....

Hope this helps!

Something searchable like your name.

I now know Don Hanson's sunfish but before then had never seen a Sunfish, nor associated it with any Maker

There are all sorts of threads posting logo pics and asking who is this?

I would suggest a space, maybe two , maybe a heavier than normal dot - so the initial is obvious.
"B. AYRES"

This is what I was thinking. Obviously the leaf would be black. 12 pt font.

I guess it's wasn't Williams.... Lol. I like it.
Does every Canadian put a maple leaf on their knives?

It's simple, clean and easily etched.

Nice simple logo. Some makers have suggested taking away the "." between your first initial and last name and just leaving a space. I think it's up to personal preference but you can make a bunch of different ones until you settle on it.

Perhaps doing a half maple leaf that hugs the end of your last name? This will save some length on the logo, allowing you to have different option for positioning the etch on the blade.

Funny we have the same initials... when I was developing my mark it was "JW Knives" on one of my test patterns that I don't think I ever posted up here...

I made this stamp at work. I plan to make a scaled down version of it soon.

I also made a makers mark of a deer's hoof print.
