This is to all the makers and collectors out there that thought sombody else was going to send in a picture of their favorite maker's mark. They didn't. :D

Send it to this e-mail address if you want it included.

don'ttypethisknifemakersmark@gmail.comorthis.

Remove the "don'ttypethis" and "orthis" from the ends and you have it. Submission of a photo is indication that the owner is giving permission for its incorporation in whole or part in the knifemakers mark database and that no copyrights will be violated in doing so. I just thought I would throw that in cause it makes me feel better.

I would think there's substantial benefits for makers and their collectors in having their "maker marks" documented/recorded.

Doesn't cost anything, and isn't difficult especially if you have only used a few marks.

Harry,

I have posted over 120 makers marks organized in a very
orderly fashion. They are of a quality good enough to be
downloaded directly and used for an Internet data/picture
base of the highest visual quality...

You never actually acknowledged that you will be using them
for your project. Or that you even looked at them...

Acknowledging what people send in will help them go on
sending you more makers marks...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I believe after we establish the format for publishing them on the CKCA website it will become obvious they are being used. However since they will most likely be incorporated into our newly formated and user friendly maker data-base this may be down the road a bit as it's a laborious project.

I'm sure Harry is examining and storing these marks, however it's obviously time consuming as well. Rather than him acknowledging every submission, is it not OK for him just to communicate if there's confusion, an image or quality issue?
Just trying to suggest ways to make the most efficient use of everyone's time. And as I have said before David, you have put a tremendous amount of time into this.

Okay Kevin, I did over react a little, but thought it is important
to establish some kind of feedback for the efforts other makers and
collectors will put into this project.

I do what I do not only because I know how to do these things
but mainly because I enjoy doing such things and as you know,
see the true importance in comprehensive documentation...

This is a project for us to enjoy and refer to today but mainly a
data/picture base of maker's marks for future generations of
custom knifemakers and collectors.

All the best,

David I apologize for not acknowledging your contributions which have pretty much amounted to the total contributions to the data base with a few exceptions from makers. I have tried to acknowledge each submission to the e-mail address but might have missed one or two. It is important to respond to each submission, and I will try to do better.:o I would rather have the submissions made by e-mail rather than on the forums because it is easier for me to keep up with.

One thing I do like is the submission of an actual picture of the mark on a blade. It can show how the mark was applied (etched or stamped) and usually where. This has been used in identifying older makers whose knives are sometimes being copied. Just a thought.

We are not creating a data base at this time. Currently we are storing the pictures and tying them to stored information that is submitted about the maker. We are toying with the idea of storing them in a photo housing site so that people can see what we have, but haven't gotten far with it yet.

This process is going to take a long time and will never be complete. So far the response has been under whelming. The post I made last Friday on three different forums generated four more contributions, that I will transfer today. I had hoped that it would generate more, but at this time there doesn't seem to be much interest in the project.

Harry,

The idea of showing the mark with a section of the knife is
indeed important for the identification of the original maker.

Actually it makes the job easier for those submitting the marks
as all they have to do is snap a medium distance close-up of
a section of about 1 1/2" of the knife and every digital camera,
even the most simple, can do this well.

All the best,

David I hope to be snapping a few from my own collection this week to add to the pot. I'm anxious to see how they turn out. Some are a little faint and that is how they will show.

Thanks again for your contributions and I really hope that others with collections of either knives or photos will take the time to add theirs to the collection of marks.

Come on guys, one mark here and one from there and
within no time a data/picture base will be created.....

Here are some new ones:

I think this is a very important project that will take a bit of effort on the part of makers, but will be a tremendous resource.

I just sent mine in. Thanks, Harry!

I got to ask though, why the; "don'ttypethis" and "orthis" ???

Happy Holidays!

Don it helps keep some of the "bots" from picking up the e-mail and swamping it with spam I've been told. Seems to be working so far.

Thanks guys for sending them in. David I really like the pictures in the last batch. Seeing the actual mark adds a lot in my opinion, and those are going to make me go back and take a shot or two over.

Harry, Notice the Henry Frank on the left (White Fish Mt)
spells incorrectly HENRY FPANK....
I have now added a good one from that period too.....

See below...

doing some of these all over again by others.....

A happy new year to all,
