Makers you recognize in a heart beat

OK, here is the idea. Some makers (probably most successful makers) have developed a "unique" look, either because they use a given solution over and over again, or because they have a more subtile signature look that makes their work recognizable, most of the time. Who are the makers you can recongize in a heart beat, and how?

Here is my list:

- Rob Hudson - octogonal handle, walnut, sweeping designs, many specific multi-bar damascus patterns, including the famous "flame edge";

- Larry Fuegen - uniquely sculpted knives;

- Barry Davis - Typical file worked bolsters on his folders (other knives are not so easy to recognize for me);

- Don Fogg - More subtil, and definitely not a 100% success rate, but there's clearly a "Fogg look". Much easier to recognize in the case of textured blades, esp. damascus. Some damascus patterns I've never seen elsewhere (feather,...)

- Jerry Fisk - for his most recognizable patterns, such as bowies, etc. However, he has inspired a large number of makers. Plus, many of his 1-of-a-kind would be hard for me to recognize.

- Tai Goo - Unique, although he's done a lot of very different stuff, and I've not seen so many of them so...

- Scott Slobodian - Unique treatment of the Jpz blade theme. His fantasy stuff is also pretty unique.

- D'alton Holder - for his stacked handles. Other models I would probably not recognize.

- Tom Mayo - TNT only - He's done a lot of other types of knives I would not recognize.

- Bill Moran - pretty unique style.

Jim Siska, no one grinds a hollow ground recurve like he does.
Bill McHenry and Jason Williams for their NewEngland style folders.
Steven Olszewski, for his immaculate carving, unsurpassed by anyone.
Jerry Rados for his turkish twist damascus, the best there is!.

I have been around the forged blade folks for years so some work that I would recognize some of you may not. One that pops into my mind before anyone else is Roger Massey. His work is the same every time. Clean crisp work with a fit and finish that is smooth as silk.

:)

Well in the realm of tacticals, there are quite a few...

Mad Dog - they all have (essentially) the same handle and awesome grinds..some even have glowing temper lines :) certainly a "Mad Dog" look

Strider - again, cord wrap or angular G10 scales mated to a tiger-striped blade are a dead giveaway (though the growing number of fakes is annoying!)

Brend - does anyone grind like Brend? Anyone? Most have high-grit finish with black Micarta scales...

Peter Marzitelli - instantly recognizable thanks to his slotted thumb opener (don't know what else to call it!)

Warren Thomas - carbon fiber and titanium blades with carbide cutting edges...don't see those everyday!

Some of those that I recognize immediately are:

Ed Fowler
Mike Snody
Michael Walker
Bob Terzuola
Jerry Fisk
Darrel Ralph
Neil Blackwood
Shane Taylor
Ed Caffrey
Brad Duncan
Kit Carson
Al Pendray
Ted Dowell
John Fitch
Ron Leuschen
David Goldberg
Ron Lake
Jess Horn
Paul Fox

This list could go on forever. There are so many makers that have easily distinguishable styles.

Steve Ryan's knives are pretty unique. I also think that Jerry Hossom makes some of the most distinctive blades out there. I have never seen a knife by anyone else that made me think, "Hossom", at first glance. I would have listed others but they were all taken by Keith.

I had a list started but when I looked at Keith's he already had them down. Great list of makers so far!:)

Jens Anso. There is no mistaking an Anso knife for somebody else's work. That whole hole thing he's got going is extremely distinctive. His sheaths are also very unique with the exotic skin coverings.

Ya'll seem to have forgotten Winkler. No way you could miss one of his period beauties.

Yeah, I realized that after I posted. He's definitely recognizable.

Wow.... I'm impressed. Most of those I know who they are but I wouldn't be able to recognize their work.

I really can't take the time to make the list. It would be 3 or 4 times longer than the ones I see here. And yes, I'm talking about makers that are EASILY recognizable to me...not just guys that I know their name.

I'm really surprised to not see some of the names from yesteryear like W.W. Cronk and Rod Chappel, and some of the present heavy hitters like Tim Hancock, Don Lozier...

These are 4 men that have some of the most distinct styles ever.

Just my two cents...I'll hold back the other $0.23 ;)

Nick

I meant to put WW Cronk, talk about in a heart beat, his knifes are some of the best i have ever seen bar none, i left out more then i posted i'm sure and here's two more that i love from San Francisco!

Will & Finck
Michael Price

James

Laci Szabo.... certainly a unique style all of his own.
Everybody else that I would think of as unique have already been listed.

So far I agree with all the above. They all have styles that are easily recognized. From Steve Ryan to Paul Fox to Ron Lake to Bob Terzuola to Emerson to Anso and even to Bob Lum and Walter Brend. I didn't see a Bob Lum up there. Good thread......RDT

poboy!!!!!!!

I like your dog, We are on our third one. A pain in the rear at times but no other dog like them!!!!!
