Makeshift and Impromptu weapons in FMA?

Does anyone have experience in FMA with teaching the use of makeshift or impromptu weapons for self-defense? My reason for asking is that even if something that could be used as a stick is available in a self-defense situation, I wonder if you "fight like you train" as Paul Vunak suggests if it wouldn't be better to train with objects that aren't ordinarily used as a weapons (e.g. pens, keys, etc) to simulate the feeling if you ever have to use it. I don't suggest this as a replacement to knife training but as a compliment. Most of the martial arts studios in my area in DC don't seem to use makeshift weapons.

I've seen Guro Dan Inosanto go into his office, pull out some magazines, roll them up, and do some makeshift stick training with them. Many people are surprised at how effective they can be.

The FCMAA group with which I train in Frederick, MD on occasion will try out some "everyday" items at different speed levels, on up to what amounts to Full Contact.

Its really a technique and implement centrifuge seperating the good from the :barf: really quickly.

You DO NOT want to catch a Punyo on the head with a rolled up airline magazine, even while wearing a welded mesh steel helmet.....

Marvellous idea...after all how often do you have your sticks
lying around!

Any ideas?
1. Magazines rolled up
2.Pens
3.Mobile phones(hey use an old one!)
4.Wallet
Only stuff lying around your house or what you carry around is allowed.
Worth a shot I think...just be careful!

Every time I rock up for my Kali lesson my instructor has something new to show me. Either a new weapon or a makeshift one. We use pens, belts, wallets, keys, etc etc etc......
Cheers
Stu.

Hello Guys,

Just for starters, I always have metal cross pens on me, I can use them as a projectile for distraction, and can close and use them very effectively on an opponent. I have stuck them into many types of training dummies and they hold up very well.

As for other Make shift tools:
Scissors
Phone and phone cord
Chair
Shoes
Towels
Newspaper(for striking or hiding a blade)
Books
Key (held edgewise in a pinch grip)
Coins
Shirt, belt, tie, bandana

This is just a few.

Krefcenz: try and hook up with some of the Sayoc practitioners in the D.C/Maryland area. We do make use makeshift weapons.

Have fun and train hard!

Nothing beats just throwing anything in your reach at an opponent (even if it's another person ;) )

I know some guys who carry in their briefcases a thick wood ruler with a metal edge. If you can get a 15-18 incher, they are especially nice.

Hey Stick Grappler,

We use the Surefire 6P light in a lock flow, to blind our opponent, while we twist them up! Lots of fun, but the spots in your eyes sure get annoying!

Airyu,

A Sure-Fire 6P, now theres one I haven't tried yet and I wear one daily........ Many Thanks!

Cross Pens are great carried a pair for YEARS, have you tried the "fat body" versions like Dr. Grip? Believe it or not, CHEAPER and even better. The wider click top and rubber around the point is easier on geriatric fingers and thumbs :D

Airyu,

hey, you mean i could turn the flashlight on first and use it? LOL

i have a mini-maglite that i tried getting a replacement bulb for, but couldn't at the time. now, i have it as my EDC :-)

seriously, with your Sayoc training, i can see you with the cross pens as projectiles, which is something i have not considered. i carry one mini-maglite and one cheap plastic ballpoint pen. you have just given me an idea to carry a few more pens :-) thanks.
