Had some fun today having a go at crafting a makeshift sheath for my 511 Garth Edition, it's definitely not a 'proper' sheath as it was carved from a piece of dead fall I picked a couple months back. I sawed the piece to length for my 511, then split a couple of relatively flat slabs with my Anniversary SHBM for the two sides of the 'pancake' sheath. Then carved a hollow for the blade to reside on the large piece with the 511.

Good practice in case you need to make one of these out of necessity, here's what it ended up looking like once I called it quits……..

Now THATS a camo sheath!

Why yes, yes it is….. :D

Thanks for all the kind words guys, it was a blast making this but dang my wrists are sore…..

I think the wood used was pretty well seasoned ash of some sort if I'm not mistaken, anybody know for sure?

I'm going to have to find another knife soon that needs some wooden pants, this is too much fun…… :)

I've got some ASH cut for next year but my kind doesnt look like that. I'm no tree identification expert though either.

Heres the only ASH I've got familiarity with.

...by this do-it-your-self-er. Also doubles as emergency fire wood. But watch to make sure that wood is dry. I'd be concerned, dry or not, that this would (or is it wood) collect moisture and rust/stain the blade. Cheers.

Just thought I would do an update on this project, I put some more time into shaping and finishing it off a bit and I think it turned out quite nicely at this point. I may just leave it like this as it is quite functional now.... :)

The retention is just about perfect, it is held snugly at the ricasso and comes free with just the right amount of tension. Plently of retention to hold it upside down and shake it a good bit without it falling out.

In my experience so far, rust has been a non-issue for me. This knife is a heavy user/project knife that is slowly being reground to full convex profile. I would imagine that wood being a natural material breathes well enough to not stay wet for long, given it is not being subjected to water constantly.

That is pretty cool :)

That is a pretty unique idea! I would've never thought of using a piece of wood as a sheath! Very creative
