Hi All I plan to make a grinder my friend said he could grab me a 3+ horse variable speed motor from his work from a mid sized conveyer belt I have access to a lathe I hope I can make the Idlers on it then I will buy the contact wheel I plan to put roller blade bearings in the idlers since there cheap and easy to find they will work right? I plan to make the frame itself out of angle iron or rectangle tubing I plan to have it like so

I don't think the roller blade bearings will last long on a belt grinder. You'd be better off investing the few dollars some high speed sealed bearings would cost. You can find them dirt cheap on Ebay if you don't mind spending some time looking.

Bryce,Go down to your local roller skating rink. They should have a few used wheels that you can get really cheap or free, two of these on a shaft makes a good ideler and you don't have to do anything but slide the two on one post and then two on another post. You can even use them for the adjusting ideler if you want to.They will last for a lot longer than you think, and can be replaced cheaply if need be.
Then someday you can invest in a good grinder if you want.

Bruce thats a good idea I will try and get some roller skate wheels but I may still try to make my own on the lathe Because its fun. I guess my drawing thing didnt work oh well. I would spend the money on a good grinder but I dont have it. I could buy a cheap 48X2 but I think this will be much better and the motor can be put on a good grinder later as well as the contact wheel so I think it will be worth it. I think I will go get the bearings from B.C. bearings they make really good bearings for DIRT cheap and sell them to companys who resell them for nuts prices Like GM Dodge and a lot of other big companys thanks for the help guys and if anyone else has other creative ideas to add please go ahead there are some great minds at work here indeed

bryce,
Here is a page with links to many sites about grinders (homemade and commercial).

$50 Knife Shop has good info on making your own grinder, and he (Wayne Goddard) does use a skate wheel on one model.
