Making a better friction folder?

Hey everyone,

Recently I just finished my first friction folder. While it didn't turn out that great, I have a good idea on how to improve them for the future.

Other than that though, what makes a good friction folder? I've heard nylon washers are smoother than the brass ones. Tighter tolerances always good. Any general advice for them is welcome!

Thanks.

Pictures would be nice to see what you have. I think design is really important in a friction folder, the balance of function open and closed is really important. I am not sure I would worry about washers and such.

D'oh. Should've remembered to post pictures.

Here's my first one. I messed up a bunch on some stuff, but the general idea is there. There are two big design flaws in there which I am changing - the butt is too sharp, and the "lock bar" is too sharp. I'm also shortening the handle just slightly. Some angles/shapes are being tweaked but they're kind of minor.

There are a few things that I feel are key in a friction folder.

- tang placement

You want the tang to sit under your hand when the blade is open, the further forward it is the less leverage you will have

- ergonomics

A tall handle will fill the hand and help keep the knife open. A handle that indexes the hand helps as well.

Good looking knife by the way! I think you can round he corners without losing your signature faceted look too, a scotchbrite belt might do the trick.
