Making a Choil = bad idea?

I just bought a steel will mini gekko on the forum and it’s great in every way except the closing. The only backlocks I’ve ever had have been spydercos that had a choil or at least enough unsharpened space so you could easily and safely close it one handed.

I’m considering making a choil on the steel will but am wondering if I should just keep it stock and trade for something with a choil? I don’t want to ruin a good blade but also don’t want to cut my finger tip off.
Opinions? Who has permanently modified their knives?

If you expect it to close on your fingers get something else or just don't use it in a manner that could cause this.
I add a little sharpening choil to all my knives that don't have one, here's my
latest.

I guess if you ever trade or resell don't do it, personally when I buy something my only consideration is myself and my use / needs, I'm an accumulator of users not a collector and don't trade or sell to afford new knives.
Knives tools airguns you name it, if it's not exactly what I want / need as it comes I make it so.
If I ever needed money and was to resort to selling my stuff I'd have a hard time because everything is customized for me, and I'm the only me so nobody else is going to want my stuff.

Doesn't that knife already have a choil on the blade?

Are you talking about adding a Boye dent on the release bar?

No, I think the OP means something more along the lines of the ricasso on Cold Steel lockbacks, which (at least in every model I've owned) is always large enough to let you drop the knife shut onto your finger without cutting yourself.

When I disengage the lock on my Ultimate Hunter, it drops freely -- but what hits my finger is the ricasso, nice and safe.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. The gekko has a very small sharpening choil but not anything large enough to use as a finger choil.

I had the large and got rid of it because I could not close it one handed (cut myself a few times trying). I get exactly what you are saying and I have often though of the same thing with this and other knives. Interested to see what answers you get here.

:) No point in having a knife you are uncomfortable using and maybe unsafe . Mod it or get rid of it .

Most of mine have minor type mods. That's part of the fun and makes the knife feel more personalized for me .

After considering everything I think I’m going to sell or trade it w/o modding it. I do really like most of it but the lock is something I think I can’t get used to.
