Hey everybody, been WAY too long since I posted a new thread here. With my son in school I thought I'd have more time to do so, but that hasn't been the case. Anywho, a couple of months ago I decided to make myself a hiking stick. Never even attempted to do so before so this was a huge learning experience. I started with a 6' fallen oak branch that was pretty solid but had some termite damage near one end.

Here is the branch I started with.

And here is the tool I used for 80% of the project.

After HOURS of sanding. Took my time on this part.

And after applying a coat of red mahogany.

Here is the finished hiking stick. Even though I am a complete novice at woodwork, I am very happy with the results. I have used my stick quite a bit now and I like it.

To be continued...

My son had expressed interest in a hiking stick of his own, so I cut down a young Tree of Heaven. An invasive species locally known as "stink trees". I wanted to experiment and see if they would make a suitable light hiking stick.

I especially like the Oak. I'm working on a couple of my own at the moment. Trying out a two tone stain. Doing a light stain first, then covering areas with tape and going over in a dark stain. Remove tape and let lighter color show. Hoping it turns out. Also attempting to make and fasten a copper cap. "Stick" with it as a hobby (see what I did there?), it's a lot of fun! Possibilities are endless!

Looking good..... Watch yourself the "making" disease can become chronic and a real problem........LOL..... Heading for the shop in a few minutes........

Lol. It's a pretty fun way to spend time working with my Bk10 and my hands. Gotta do more, but we FINALLY got some much needed rain. This summer, it's on!

I guess it is a good "disease" to have then. Better than the flu that's been kicking my butt lately. My next project, I think, will be making an atlatl. Should be fun!
