Making a handle ?

Hey guys. I have some knives that I think need some new handles. I seen some videos on how to make micarta but have not heard much about epoxy/polyurethane...
I've read that epoxy is too brittle once cured. All I can find on poly is info about it as a laminate or coating. Here's what i am wanting to do.
The plan is to take a rectangular tray and fill it with RTV silicone. Then lay my original
scale in the silicone level with the silicone and let dry. Peel scale out of silicone and fill with resin, epoxy or poly. and hardener. lastly drill out scales for screws and clean up edges then attach. I'm not sure what type of material to use for the scales but I know I'd like them to be clear or as colorless as possible. I definitely don't know what I'm doing but I'm going to attempt it anyway so any advice or correction would be appreciated. Thanks,Dan

Hey, my kinda guy!!! ;)

I have some paperweights I made with cast resin many years ago. They are still around, though they have scratched up somewhat with age. You thinking about floating anything in the resin? That's what I did... floated layers of coins. That stuff is TOUGH once hardened, but the rough edges are prone to chipping.

Thanks for chiming in about my problem. I'd like them to be clear but from what I've read about cracking I probably will use some white linen or some kind of light colored and strong cloth. Another thing that I'm wondering about is how can I make a mold with the ability to add layers of cloth? I have a fixed blade that needs scales and I can make micarta to take care of it but I need to make a mold to make scales for my folders. I'd like to have texture on the folder scales so I figured I'd put down a thin layer of resin(or whatever you guys end up recommending) first and then ad cloth so the texture on the original scales is sharp. Maybe the answer is simple. Does anyone know of a clear or almost clear liquid plastic/epoxy? that can be used effectively as knife scales approx. 1/8-3/16" thick on a folder without cloth support?
