Making a hawk or axe out of a sledge hammer?

I came across and old sledge hammer and I have a forge. Would that steel be any good for an axe? How hard would it be to pound that out?

That's a lot of iron to move by hand but I have done it. I've made tomahawks from axes and axes from sledge hammers. Depends on how bad you want it. Simple heatin' and beatin' , just a lot of it.....Randy

To the OP, it could be done but that would be one heavy axe.

Is it like a 3lb. one hand sledge or an 8, 10, 12 pound maul. heat, beat, repeat, alot. but when you are down your arm ought to be strong enough to pick it up, if it didn't fall off.

Git yurself a power hammer, or maybe a ball peen hammer to pound on for a first project.
