So do you need to leave the bottom on the paint can, when making a hobo stove? or cut it off

I have seen multiple different directions, and I like the idea of a self contained one better, but no idea.

I made one out of a five gallon roof coating can which I used for several years when living outside. I left the bottom in so it was easy to move. If you do so make sure to cut the door/ feed hole 2-3 inches up from the bottom of the can and put a couple inches of sand in the bottom of the can. This helps it to not burn through.

Same principal c an be applied to the smaller 1 gal can stoves.

those are the instructions i used for this one

thats the first time i used it. worked well, tho i cut the pot stand in half later. later replaced the wire potstand with two crossing pieces of steel 2" tall. added slits to the top of stove for the steel to rest in. use this little stove lots. it works great. simple to make.

Make it how you like it. Here's a quickie one I put together. It's just a simple hobo stove - nothing fancy but it works well...

I drilled holes in the bottom of mine and built legs for it so it can draw and be more stable. I cooked eggs, ham, and hashbrowns on mine Sunday morning whilst outdoors. Kids loved it and it looked real cool too. Just sayin'. Moose
