Making a knife out of a file

Seen this on youtube and figured Id come directly to the pro's. My question is do I have to use coal to soften steel? can I use any heat source?

Any heat source will work. By asking this, I assume you are just starting this journey. I'd suggest going to the 'knifemakers shop talk' area and do a lot of reading. Some of the best makers & smiths sharing the 'How To' of knifemaking.
