Making a knife roll....

I have about a dozen straigh blade knives - nothing over 10 inches overall.

I need to stop storing them in the sheaths (I know... I know... duh....)

I don't need anything fancy - but I really don't know where to start. I have only made items out of heavy leather (6-10 ounce) and could use some guidance if I make this out of cloth or light leather.

If any of you have done this, have plans, or ideas - all would be appreciated.

Make your knife roll out of an oily rag. You can get blade covers at the butcher supply store and cut them to length. Leather has residual Chromic or Tannic acid in it and probably some salts also. The finished roll might look like a giant envelope with vertical seams to create pockets.

GREAT idea on the butcher supply store - that is what I worried about - but with those on there - no issue. Then a duck cloth would be fine.

I've got an old cabinet with drawers for my collection, but I do store the knives with sheaths in the sheaths. Guess I am a bad leatherbender. :p

Proper maintenance goes a long way, and I know you do it right so dont worry. That roll could do more damage than open storage trapping moisture.

The issue I have, unlike you dry folks in San Antonio, is the Humidity in Houston.

With that said - I think oil, and a breathable cloth may be my best bet.

breathable, there's your key. :)

Not so dry here lately, kinda wish it would go back in some respects. But Houston, no, that's a little too much humidity for me. We did have a "swamp cooler" in Lubbock though, and that makes an environment like no other and I still didnt have issues, both fire arms and knives. The walls however, heh.

But, it is better than the salt air of the coast, that stuff is death to steel. A buddy of mine lives in Corpus, y'all dont have nothing on his predicament.

Being a leatherworker and all...have you ever thought about making Finnish puukko-style sheaths for your own personal knives? The wooden liner should allow you to store your knives in the sheath without damaging the blades.
