i was thinking about making a practice balisong out of wood, even the blade. you could make any stlye of handle you wanted and any stlye of blade, alot easier than out of steel, and you couldnt get cut.

you might have to insert some lead weights intot he blade and handles as the lack of weight of wood might hamper the mnipulation unless you got REAL good pivits =)

I have actually been thinking about that for a while now. (both building a practice one or making a bail with wood handles) It is a lot harder that you might think. Like S. said wood is TOO light. But I have some ideas in mind...

Any one out there have any good suggestions for making Bali handles???

Thanks

why not just use a wooden blade? I know that stores in Califorina sell practice butterfly knifes. They look similar to jag's but they have this butter knife type blade. YOu should inquire at your local knife shop.

the wood handles will be like a shell around metal handles that i will make, and the blade will be strong wood.

Sounds cool quick...i think that you just inspired me to do the same. What kind of wood are you thinking of using. It would have to be something heavy like Snipe said....huh maybe maple or oak... those two are readily available? you mentioned wood to cover the metal...how are you planning on doing this? kinda like the FHM's? Well be safe all-g

Well crap, there go all my good ideas

Actually this is good because I can see some results and what you come up with. How do you plan on making a metal handle core?

im not going to make metal handles, im going to use the handles from one of my multi tool knives, they are aluminum, the wood handles will be slightly bigger than the metal ones, so they slide over the metal handles. then i can drill any type of handle i want. i can make wee hawk, utility, tanto, spearpoint, and clip point blades out of wood. im thinking about making clip point or wee hawk for my wooden balisong. i just need a name and model number for my custom wood balisong.

You can make it as big as possible, so as you can make a nunchak of it!

If you can get a very cheap bali, flatten the edge or brake off the blade you'll have a decent practice balisong. Tapin around the handle will prevent the little possibility of injure from broken handle.

Anyways congrats for your proceeding!

im putting pics in the next post so you can see what the wooden balisong looks like, its going to have benchmade stlye of handles, and its going to be latchless, and its going to be spray painted in high gloss blue or black, and the blade will be high gloss silver.

NAh dont spray paint it. Leave la natural. Maybe give it a stain finish. you made it from oak right? That's my opinion.

If I were you I'd sand it smooth and varathane it. You can stain it before you varathane for a darker look.

you can always drill holes and put metal rods into it. or at least make the butt of the handles steel just fir weight.

my digital camera is messed up so i cant post pics yet. it has a 4" wee hawk blade, its also pretty heavy for just wood, i think it weighs somewhere around 4 or 5 ounces. i im almost done with it, but the hardest part is trying to drill the holes in the handles in a perfect sequence. if anyone need help or tips about making wood handles, email me. well ill stop typing now
