I have an old file, brand is K&F, that's all that is stamped on it and i'm wondering if this steel is allready heat treated to a suitable hardness for a shaving razor type blade, it was a good file, but it is near the end of its life. if i can carefully grind it to a blade without having to get it heat treated i think i will, what do you guys think?

Addition: have done a lot of grinding, came out good. am starting to sand the edge now, will get pics later.

I have made three knives from old files but I did it the hard way.

If you are careful and do not ruin the temper when grinding/sanding then yea you can make a knife/razor out of your old file.

Good luck and post pics when done ! :D

Tostig: What way is the hard way? I'm also in the process of finalizing my plans for my first file knife and I'm trying to collect as much info as possible.

Yes you can. Just grind an edge on it. Should shave very well depending on your sharpening skills.

The file is allready heat treated, which makes it much harder to sharpen or grind. and obviously you cant file it. good luck with your blade, i am still sharpening mine, hard stuff!
