Making a thumbstud

Now that I'm the proud owner of a lathe :D, I wanted to make a thumbstud for my first liner lock.

But I ran into the problem that after I drilled my 1,6 mm hole into the 4 mm round stock of brass and threaded the hole, I can't work the actual stud.

The problem is if I cut of the threaded "raw" stud how can I chuck it into the lathe to work on it on the full lenght? Do I need a special fixture or is it impossible to work on such a little (ca. 8 mm long) piece of round stock in the lathe?

If it's not clear what I'm asking, I'll put up some pictures.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Regards Marcus

Take a piece of larger round stock, clearance drill a hole through the center, then screw the little stud to it, then chuck the assembly up?
That's not how I'd do it, but I don't have a lathe, so I would do it in a mill...
Say hello to the machinsts that will show up and correct me...
