I am looking at getting a touchmark made, however would like to "attempt" to make my own.

What kind of steel? and a question? Can I use a hardened bolt? say grade 8, anneal it, make my mark, and reharden? I have no real clue, how hard grade 8 is, and no clue how to equate that with rockwell hardness. Also thought of maybe a harbor freight cheap chisel to use, but IMHO that may be worse than the bolt. Am I in the ballpark? Or WAY off? Help is welcomed and appreciated. Would be wanting to stamp hot blades, but also leatherwork(moreso than blades, as I do far more leatherwork)

Henry Evers uses O1 for his stamps. I have not used one but plan to in the future.

For leather stamps, I would assume you could use just about any steel as it won't need to be too hard.

I use O-1 a lot for making special tools for the shop. I have made reamers, woodruff keyseat cutters, and other cutting tools for milling steel. O-1 is easy to machine and very easy to heat treat.

If you are wanting a personalized leather stamp, you can get then for around $35 with all your info on them.

Good luck and let us know how things work out for you.
