Hi - since I sometimes miss when I swing an axe, I would like to put a
Collar on the haft just behind the head. Might be while re-hafting or not. Any ideas on materials and how to?

We used to wrap our sledge handles with insulated copper wire. That worked well though it's not very attractive. A lot of guys are doing this with Paracord now. Leather laces would make a more attractive alternative.

Wrap a two or three inch wide strip of rubber inner tube or cross section of bike inner tube on it then overwrap it with insulated copper wire.......should take whatever mistreatment it gets. If it gets looking bad from use then do it again....costs you what? maybe twenty cents? Use scrap inner tube and salvaged wire and you have zero cost.

What size an axe are we talking? I personally only see a collar being practical for full sized 34"ers as you don't really need the area below the head for choking up and don't need to move your hand all the way up there during the up-stroke of a swing. Anything shorter and it becomes more a hindrance than a blessing.

Even then, I'm not sold on the idea of collars as as I think it makes overstrikes too forgiving and teaches bad form. I's say it's definitely a good idea for dedicated splitting axes/mauls though as the area below the head is still going to see wear and tear even with accurate swings and proper form.

Multiple layers of duct tape for a user. Heck we have even used this after the handle was broken.
