Making an axe in Maine, 1965

I've watched this a few times, and have noticed different things each time. Lately I just marvel at the lung abuse. No dust mask, grinding steel on a wheel, all the forge smoke, working with a cigarette on the lip, all day every day for years. My lungs are bleeding just watching these guys.

Grinders were known to die at a young age. They got higher pay, though, so there was never a shortage of folks signing up for the job.
