Making damascus - Cracking problem

Hi!

I tried to make damascus today. I'm a beginner, but I have a friend who has done this kind of damascus several times before, so everything should be ok considering materials and techniques.

Everything was going well until I folded the material. After the folding and second forge weld I noticed cracks on the side. I have no idea why they occurred and neither does my friend.

I would be very pleased with even the tiniest bits of help.

Most likely forging too hot with the wrong alloy. Need more information.
